• Excel “Open With” Issue

I just upgraded from Office 2007 to 2010 and excel files suddenly do not have a default program to open them. When I right click and select “Open With” Excel is not an open. Unfortunately I clicked “Microsoft Office” by mistake so if I click on an excel file it opens MS Office Picture Viewer but the excel file does not open.

How Can I get all of the excel files to open with Excel again?

    Thanks,
    Jordan

      Hi Jordan,

Close Excel, then from the Start menu’s ‘search programs and files’ box, input ‘Excel.exe /regserver’ and press .

      Paul,
Unfortunately that did not seem to work. I ran that command and it opened up Excel 2010.

right-click an .xls/xlsx file and choose open with… at the bottom should be “Choose Program” and a list of programs should open for you. If Excel isn’t on the scroll list, you may have to browse for the executable.

Thisis how XP works; Vista and Win7 should be similar.

Unfortunately that doesn’t work. I have chosen the executable and it still doesn’t take.

      Jordan,

      1. Click the Orb {previously known as Start}.
      2. Type: File Associations in the search box.
      3. At the top of the search list click on: Change the file type associated with a file extension.
      4. Click on the first item {.xla} listed as a Microsoft Office Excel … file.
      5. Click the Change program… button.
      6. Click on Microsoft Office Excel, if presented, or click on Browse… and search until you find your Excel.exe file then click on it.
      7. Repeat from step 4. until you’ve exhausted all the items listed as Microsoft Office Excel.

This should fix your problem unless things are seriously messed up!

In 64-bit Windows 7, Office 2007 places Excel.exe in the following subdirectory:

        Root Directory/Program Files (x86)/Microsoft Office/Office12

Where “Root Directory” is the location of your Windows 7 installation. In step 6 above, browse to this location to resolve the problem.

I tried that. I clicked change program and then I selected Excel from the Office14 folder, but it won’t actually select Excel even after I say Ok. I May need to reinstall!

I was able to fix this by backing up my User Profile, Logging Off, deleting it, and then creating a new user profile and importing my backed up data.
