Does anybody know what CTRL ~ does in excel? It changes the pixels but I don’t know the affect of that or why would you use it.

It toggles between viewing results and viewing formula’s.

Or is it the same as
      CTRL+SHIFT+#
Apply the Date format with the day, month, and year.

Its definitely not the same in my Excel. It is supposed to switch between displaying results and formulas. If it is doing something different on yours, then you may have it assigned to a macro.

I’ve sure I’ve noticed you say that before. But to switch between formulae and values I use [CTRL] + [`] – that’s the one to the left of 1 (if you see what I mean!) and that has always been the same for me on any machine I’ve ever used. That said, I just went to check [CTRL]+[SHIFT]+[#] and didn’t get the time stamp as I expected. Is this a keyboard layout thing? Regional settings?

You are correct that it’s Ctrl-` (left apostrophe), not Ctrl-~ (tilde)which shows formulae. (Many of us may be guilty of this misstatement!)

On standard installations, XL 97 Ctrl-Shift-# gives a date format , and Ctrl-Shift-@ yields a time format; Ctrl-shift-`, a.k.a Ctrl-~, sets format to General.
