I have some Excel templates (xlt) that I’ve put on the server (running windows server 2008).

They run fine (opening as xls sheets) from most of the computers in the office, but from the computers that have “Microsoft Open XML Converter” installed, they open as templates and any changes saved modify the original template. And while they are open, no one else can use them.

No matter how many times I tell windows (both vista and xp) to use Excel to open them, they open with the converter.

How can I get rid of the converter, or make the templates work on all machines. We have mostly Excel 2003, with a few machines on 2007.

On the offending machines, click start, run and enter this:

      “c:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeExcel.exe” /regserver

(quotes mandatory, change path if needed). That usually fixes problems like these.

Thanks, I’ll try that tomorrow (today is a holiday)

GREAT>>>> that fixed it (just had to change the script to “Office11”

Well, it worked on the systems with windows 32, but in the vista 64 I had to change the path again, and it does not like what it sees.
Here is the error, and you can see the path in the explorer window. I don’t see the cause.

I think you may have typed the path incorrectly.

In the screen shot you posted the Explorer window shows it has a space before the left parenthesis [“Program Files (x86)”] where the error indicates what you typed had no such space [“Program Files(x86)”]
