Excels default template location? (Excel 2000>)

Hi, i’ve hit a blank….
I am looking for excels default template. This must be the file that allows me to make changes that will affect formatting and general setup. When changed here it affects all workbooks opened in Excel. Where does this file reside?

There is no such file until you create one, or rather two default templates.

Set up a workbook with all the settings you prefer (page setup, number of worksheets, formatting, etc.). Save it as an Excel template named Book.xlt in your XLSTART folder. The name MUST be Book.xlt for the English language version of Excel. When you create a new workbook not based on a specific template, Book.xlt will be used.
Also create a workbook with all the settings you prefer, but with just one worksheet. Save is as an Excel template named Sheet.xlt in your XLSTART folder. The name MUST be Sheet.xlt. When you insert a new worksheet into a workbook, it will be based on Sheet.xlt.

After installing a second copy of Win XP, I moved the Book.xlt in XLSTART from the original XP to the new XP. I also moved a file named PERSONAL.xls too. It is a hidden workbook in Book.xlt. I found that when I use Excel within the new XP system, all of my toolbar customizations are missing. In addition, even though my Options specify that the default font is Arial 10 point, Excel opens with a default font of Garamond 12 point. Is there a way to fix this?

Customizations are in an XLB file. You can create a minor change to create a new XLB, then find the old one, rename it to match and copy over the other one. I think they are all compatible.

Does your Book.xlt have Garamond 12 set in its Normal style? That would overrule the setting in Tools | Options…
