Exception in OE- VxD

For past few days, after I’ve been on the web and searching, I will get message an Exception in OE,
in VxD. I can continue to surf for a few moments, then I’m frozen. (using AOL 4).
(At bottom of screen it says: Connecting to site 127.0.0.1)

When I reinstall the AOL adapter everything is okay for that session.

Does this mean my video driver is going? I seem to remember this happened a while ago, but can’t remember how I overcame the problem. I did not, at that time, download/install a new driver.

If you recently installed any new software – try removing it. The error you are seeing is because a program is doing something that it’s not allowed to do – in other words, breaking the rules (usually accessing memory not assigned to it).

My best suggestion would be to go to the Windows Update website and grab any available critical fixes, and if you possibly can, upgrade (or better still get rid of) AOL to a newer version. AOL is currently at version 8 – 6 and 7 being relatively stable, but AOL is not the most reliable software in the world. The fact that you can get some stability by reinstalling the AOL ‘adapter’ points at AOL as the culprit. For the record AOL stomps on networking needlessly when you install it.

‘Connecting to 127.0.0.1’ means your web browser is trying to connect to your own PC. 127.0.0.1 is called a loopback address, which is the machine you are running on – why it would be connecting to itself is an interesting question.

A final thought, updating your drivers – not just the video – is probably a sound idea. I don’t think there’s any conclusive evidence yet that your video driver is what is going south, but keeping your device drivers current is always a good idea. With any changes – take them slowly, and one step at a time. Don’t carpet-bomb your PC with software updates or you could end up in a far worse bind.

Mark – Thanks again for your speedy response.

The only newly installed software is AVG and since I’ve had this problem before, I doubt that’ the problem.

I’ve stuck with AOL 4 because I’ve heard [horror] stories about later versions including resource hogging.

Thanks for the suggestion of the windows fixes (tho, years ago, I downloaded the suggested ones and my computer crashed. Couldn’t deetermine which fix did it. So, with those, too, I guess one-by-one is the answer.

I’m a bit shy of downloading drivers (scared) but I’ll bite that bullet, too.
