Expand short form URL to full link

Since I don’t know what this feature is actually called, I can’t look it up to find how it works!

Occasionally I see a link like

  http://www.website.co.uk/shortform  

which expands to a full URL, like

  http://www.website.co.uk/much/longer/path/...herealpage.html  

when you click on it, and the browser then displays it.

So, what is this feature called and how (and where) can you set up the mechanism?

No, not really – this is for the same domain name, not substituting the original one by TinyURL.com…

If someone were to type my first example into the address field of a browser and press Enter, suddenly, and magically, the second link substitutes the first, and the expected webpage is displayed…
