Win 7 Home Prem 2.4 g Intel Core2 Quad6600 4g RAM. Yesterday afternoon my Hotmail email screen froze and dimmed while I was deleting a message at about the same time that I was inserting an SD photo card into a reader. I finally did a restart and after it was up and running OK I went to Start and clicked on Control Panel and nothing happened. Same with Games or Device and Printers and Computer. I then began getting error messages stating that “Server execution failed”.(pics attached). I did a System Restore to a point a day before the problem began, but nothing changed. Problem seems to center on Explorer.exe file which no longer functions. Everything else appears to function as normal, but I can’t access Control Panel, etc. and the messages continue for a minute or so after trying the shortcuts. Email and browser seems OK. I will really appreciate suggestions for curing the problem, and its possible cause.

AskWoody LoungerAugust 21, 2010 at 2:09 pm #1240688PROBLEM SOLVED. Google found the following post from 7 Forums of 9-17-09. I found that the address of the Documents file had been changed from C to T, which is my thumb drive. I made that correction at the first location he mentions. The second location would not accept the change for some reason. Anyhow it worked, even after a restart. Windows Explorer now works, as do the shortcuts to Control Panel and Computer, etc on the start menu. I never realized how many items depend on Win Explorer for their function. I certainly thank Gigaherz for providing the post. I hope this will help others in th.e future.
Many thanks to Gigaherz and to Google as it found his following post on this forum for 9-17-09.
Hello people,
I just today had this same problem in my Windows 7 profile.
The solution is to go to regedit, and change 2 keys to point to valid places:Code:HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell FoldersPersonal
and
Code:HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerShell FoldersPersonal
You can set back the defaults by looking at how the other entries in those keys look like.
I’m not enterely sure if the second one is necessary, but I changed both to point to valid places and it works now.
