    I got this message:
    #
    # A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment:
    #
    # EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) at pc=0x77978da9, pid=3796, tid=6388
    #
    # JRE version: 6.0_26-b03
    # Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (20.1-b02 mixed mode, sharing windows-x86 )
    # Problematic frame:
    # C [ntdll.dll+0x38da9]
    #

There is a bunch of code and stuff behind it.

The system keeps on running. Is this something to be concerned about?

When something like Java gets wonky or just plain stops working, the first thing I think of is to RE-Install it.
Of course, always make sure that you have the very latest version.
Without complete information about your computer and your OS, that’s the best I can come up with.
      Good Luck,
      The Doctor 😎

        Thanks.
I have Win7-pro and always install a new java version when it’s announced. Everything seems to be running Ok.

Is this when visiting a particular site?

Sun provides a short explanation of what Java Runtime is. I suspect you might have hit a site that had a small problem with Java. Unless this becomes a regular issue, I would think you would be safe ignoring it this time. If it does become a chronic thing I would uninstall JRE then go to the Java download site and reinstall the latest version. Understand there is both a 32 Bit version and a 64 Bit version. (see the link to the left for the 64 Bit version)

Thanks, everything is running OK. I’ll just wait until it happens again, and then re-install java.

By your last Post, I can not tell IF you realize EACH Java “Update” is a complete Version in and of itself !? Therefore, for safety concerns, there should ONLY be ONE “Update/Version” on a computer . ALL “old” “Versions/Updates” ( other than the latest one ) should be uninstalled, though Java now supposedly uninstalls ALL “old” versions when installing their latest !? To be sure, you should seriously consider using the FREE program “JavaRa” which I believe is available at http://raproducts.org/wordpress .

I encountered this problem after downloading the recent (Jan 2013) Java security patch. Then, when I visited the cbssports.com web site and tried to go to NFL/scores/game tracker, the window would close and give me the “fatal error” message. It did this everytime I tried to go to “scores/game tracker”. I solved the problem by clicking on the “tools gear” in the upper right corner of IE, then selecting “internet options”, then “programs”, then “manage add-ons”, and then scrolled down to Oracle America, Inc and enabled “Java plug-in SSV Helper”, which was disabled by default. This fixed it for me — no more “fatal error” messages.
