When I restart my computer I get the reminder: “Backup your file encryption certificate and key.”  Using the command “cipher /u” at command prompt it did not list any files meaning, I think, that no files are encrypted.  However, the reminder keeps coming up. And ideas? File-Encryption-Key-Reminder-Capture

      Did you use

      cipher /u
      or
      cipher.exe /u
      ?

Did you use a user-profile cmd prompt, or administrator cmd?

Looking at search results, this problem has been around for a long time. It seems some downloaded files can cause the problem.

        Thanks.

I think I found the problem but not sure why cipher /u did not pick it up.  Maybe because I did not run cipher /u in administrator mode.  I downloaded Process Explorer as a zip file and that seemed to cause the notice.  When I deleted it and restarted, the problem went away.  Reran cipher /u as you suggested in administrator mode but did not pick it up in the recycle file.

This is the only computer that it happens on.  Trying to figure out what program is causing it.  It is alarming because the first thought is that there is malware that has encrypted some files.

What happens if you choose “back up now” from that dialog?

      cheers, Paul

I was not sure I should since I did not know what would happen.  Now it does not appear anymore.  Seems like it gets triggered by a zip file – only on this computer.  I moved the zipped file (Process Explorer) to the recycle bin for now.
