Based on Lincoln’s review in the October 14 letter I gave this program a try. Seems to work well for what I want. However, I still don’t understand the difference between Echo and Mirror. It would seem they are both the same thing. Anyone here know the difference?

Second question. I am running this program on a new laptop running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit. For some reason the laptop will not go into hibernation. In the course of trying to diagnose that I uninstalled FileGee. Then ran CCleaner and removed the registry entries it found related to FileGee. Since that didn’t resolve my hibernation issue I re-installed the program. What surprised me was that when I opened FileGee the jobs that I had created were there and ready to run. This raises the question of how do you really get rid of a program?

Hello… Don’t know anything about “FileGee” …. But i do know and have used “Macrium Reflect Free” to Image my OS’s http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp and it works as advertised . ( not a well as Acronis 2010 ) In answering the second question….Removing installed programs ..you will need some tools … along with programs like CCleaner. Revo un-installer, etc
1. Download and install “Everything” http://www.voidtools.com/ …configure it to only scan the drives that you want IE: C: otherwise it will scan every drive on your OS.
2. Type in whatever program that you want to delete (find ) … when the list comes up ,you can right click on each entry and delete. you will be surprised how many entries will be left over from your previous deleting.
3. Use a program like jv-16 power tools (registry cleaner not free ) to scan for registry dead ends.
4. You will then likely have to do a manual check to all the usual places… Registry entries, Program Data, AppData …local … roaming , etc. to be sure
5. Didn’t say it was going to be easy …. one more thing. You may need a program (free ) called “Unlocker” get it from “FileHippo” in whatever flavor your OS needs…. This will be for the files that are “locked” and won’t let you delete them …. Your security may complain about “unlocker” … but it is a safe program …. most OS’s don’t like being messed with.
Post back if you need more “info” i just scratched the surface

Hi Fred, just got the portable version, any tips on settings you have would be nice.

Hello… I only use “Everything” to find hidden folders files, and the only change that i made to the “default settings ” is with the “Volumes” tab. I only select my C: drive. I guess if your in the habit of installing things on other drives , you should configure it to scan those as well. As far as “creating” files …. i am only aware that it builds (creates instantly) and maintains a database for NTFS volumes, (that you have chosen).I use this as a better option than the “unwieldy” MS offering, and it’s lightning fast. i keep a “icon” in my “quick launch bar” I think that it’s a “must have ” for anyone who likes to “fool” with all things OS. Not knowing the program but knowing general principles of most backup/syncronization programs, echo would be one way backup, source to destination, nothing is automatically deleted in destination even if its deleted in source. Mirror is syncronization, where identical copies are maintained between source and destination, so if its deleted in source, it also gets deleted in destination.

There are several options including synchronize. Here is the information they provide for echo and mirror.

“Echo
When executing job, the software copies the new files or updated files in the source file folder to the target file folder, and doesn’t copy the same files repeatedly, and deletes the deleted files of the source file folder in the target file folder.

Mirror
In the case of job execution, any file existing in the source directory but not existing in the target directory or the files with different final modification time in the two directories shall be copied to the target file folder. Meanwhile, the files existing in the target directory but not existing in the source directory shall be deleted. This job is always aimed at keeping the files in the target file folder same as the files in the source file folder.

Except for “Synchronize” and “Mirror”, all other types of jobs do not deal with the files created, updated or deleted by the user in the target file folder. That is to say, for the files not copied by this software to the target file folder, the software deems that the files do not exist. While for the files not deleted by this software, the software deems that these files still exist in the target file folder.

When executing the above-mentioned jobs, if the software finds the files in the source file folder do not make a change, it shall not perform any handling for the files, but only record the final inspection time.”

Hello… I posted the complete install path so you (or others ) could check and see where “everything” installs itself .Files Folders etc. Also as an example to the OP (jcgc50) of what a typical install path looks like.. Not as simple as it seems ( to un-install ) even with a small program like Everything. Regards Fred

That looks like a little finer distinction than the usual. If I read it right they are both syncronization of source and target BUT in the case of Echo, if you put additional files into the target folder that did not come from the source folder, then those files will be ignored, whereas in Mirror, those files would be deleted because they do not exist in the source folder.
What I’m not sure of from the description is what is the difference between Mirror and Syncronize because Mirror sounds like the exact description I’m accustomed to for syncronize.
