In a document I’m working on I want to do a find/replace to change all underlined words to italics (with no underline), without using character styles. Can’t quite figure it out.

      Select Edit | Replace… or press Ctrl+H.
Click the More button to display extra options.
      Clear the ‘Find what’ box.
With the insertion point still in this box, click Clear Formatting if this button is enabled.
      Click Format and select Font…
Select the underline style you want to search for; leave the rest as it is.
      Click OK.
      Clear the ‘Replace with’ box.
With the insertion point still in this box. click Clear Formatting if this button is enabled.
      Click Format and select Font…
Select Italic in the Character Style box, and select (None) in the Underline Style box; leave the rest as it is.
      Click OK.
Now click Find Next, or Replace All, whichever you prefer.

Thanks. I wasn’t selecting the proper underline style in the Format/Font box.

You can also select Edit | Replace or Ctrl F
In the Find area depress Ctrl + U and type in the word and then move to the Replace area and depress Ctrl + I and type the word.
Then click on replace all. Same thing, but I prefer to use the quick keys. Of course I’m doing this in Word 2003; not sure if you can do it that way in 2002. Just adding my two cents worth if it can be of help to anyone.

It works in Word 2002 too. I didn’t know that, so thanks for the tip! thumbup

Since Clark wants to replace Underlined with Italic, not Underlined, he’d have to press Ctrl+I, then press Ctrl+U twice in the ‘Replace with’ box. And since he wants to replace any text, he should leave the ‘Find what’ and ‘Replace with’ boxes blank.
