Ok, I know I should be able to do this but I’m at a loss. When I’m using my laptop on the road w/o external mouse how do I navigate the current page w/o using the scroll bar. You would think that PgUp & PgDn would work but no luck here. I did a search and neither is listed on the shortcut keys list. I”ve noticed that the Space bar & Shift Space bar will accomplish this function but it is not intuitive and doesn’t work in all situations. Any Ideas?

Page up and Page down work to scroll the page if it is active, i.e., once you have clicked on it somewhere (not a form field). Otherwise, the keystrokes seem to be ignored.

Some track pads have a scroll area on the side where you can flick your finger up or down to scroll the page. This should work like the scroll wheel on a mouse.

Hello RG – Have you tried your Arrow keys? Hold the Up arrow or Down arrow.

      Jefferson,

Thanks for reminding me about the scroll area on the touch pad I’d forgotten about that…works fine. The PgUp & PgDn keys do not work even if the mouse has been clicked in the page.

      Tim,

The up and down arrow keys also do not work. This is a 6mo old Dell Insprion with an i-5 processor.

      Both,

      Thanks for the suggestions.

Sorry RG – The arrow keys work on a 6+ year old Dell Inspiron 1100 and all of my Dell desktops. That’s the price of progress!!!

I’ve noticed that all the responses here are general. The truth is it depends somewhat on the type of page you are navigating. If you’re in a standard HTML page then the arrow keys as well as pageUP/Down should work (Make sure you click in an empty space directly next to the scroll bar to ensure the correct page/page part that is selected). Some pages use alternative code like Java, Flash, Shockwave, and even some rarer formats like xml (rare in the sense of it’s use as a web page).

I know for scrolling through an online textbook of mine I have to click the scroll bar and drag it, no if and’s or but’s. For this page and the reply page so long as the focus is on the HTML aspect of the page and not a form I can use the traditional controls.
