    Greetings loungers.

Running on my daughter’s laptop & just had a normal-looking Firefox version update happen. Gave it the OK and it updated normally and FF restarted and immediately gave a warning it was an outdated version of FF.

Checked the help and sure enough it was version 3.0.

I am sure this machine was running at least a version 3.6 this morning.

So downloaded FF 3.6.10 and reinstalled from scratch, just to be safe. I would be curious to hear if anyone else has seen this happen or if I just blundered through a space-time anomaly.

Very suspicious. Please check thoroughly for malware.

I started having problems with FF, and in fact 3.6.10 would not update install at all. I had to uninstall 3.6.9 to install 3.6.10, then started having mysterious errors. I finally saiid good-bye to FF and went to IE 9 and Chrome 6. I use both regularly and like the new interfaces.

      Thanks for your responses.

JScher2000 – I should have mentioned that was the first thing I did – ran AVg & Malwarebytes scans – all clean. Also have no other indications of infections so don’t think that is it.

Ted – your situation sounds a bit similar. I am now suspecting a reg problem which the reinstall fixed. FF seems to be fine now.
Not my machine so I probably won’t try IE9 on this loaner but will on my own system when I return from travelling when it comes out of beta (maybe it already is – haven’t checked).

Looks to have been some kind of isolated incident in any case.

Jock, I’ve been using FF for at least 8 years & the 3.6 versions starting with 3.6.4 do update very strangely. That said, I’ve never had an update revert to an earlier version. If it was me, I’d probably uninstall FF & reinstall as Ted Myers did. 3.6.9 can be found at http://bit.ly/cdi7kx. Uninstalling FF does not delete your profile unless you specifically tell it to.

I don’t allow Firefox to update itself (only add-ons). Instead, I run the FileHippo update checker regularly (for other programs as well as Firefox) and also I subscribe to the Secunia advisory emails. These tools tell me whenever a new version of Firefox is available, and when it is I download it and install it externally to Firefox itself. I have never had any problems in doing so, and it has certainly never reverted to an earlier version. The version number is included in the name of the downloaded install file, so you know what you are getting.
