• Firewall turned off notification – can’t turn off.

I’ve always turned off Windows firewall and relied on my router for firewall security.  In the past I could turn off the nagging notifications that the firewall was turned off that would pop up each morning when I start up my laptop.  Since I installed Windows 10 1903 I can no longer find any setting that lets me do away with the nagging message each morning.  Now it’s become a “quest” 🙂 just to do away with it.  I’ve tried adding the registry setting…

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\

    Notifications\Settings\Windows.SystemToast.SecurityAndMaintenance]
    “Enabled”=dword:00000000

But that hasn’t worked.  It appears to be ignored.

I looked in Group Policy for the “Disable Security and Maintenance” notification but it isn’t there.

There isn’t an option in Settings anymore to turn off the notifications.

So has anyone any ideas on what else could be tried to eliminate this nuisance message?

    Thanks,

    Bob

      Good catch.

      Short answer, I don’t know.

There isn’t an option in Settings anymore to turn off the notifications.

Try Settings, System, Notifications & actions, Get notifications from these senders, Security and Maintenence.

        For a finer-grained approach…

Click the Start button, type Security & Maintenance and then click on the Security & Maintenance control panel option.

Choose Change Security and Maintenance settings.

        Uncheck Network Firewall

I found the Security and Maintenance Control Panel option and unchecked it.  I attached a screen clip that shows it unchecked.  Sigh… Microsoft doesn’t care.  I still receive the notification about Windows Firewall…

Can you double-check to be certain it’s an OS-generated notification and not something that your AV software is generating?

App-generated notifications don’t look different enough (IMO) – everything look OS-generated unless the app makes an effort to apply their own branding.

Hello, and thank you for that thought.  I don’t run 3rd party AV software.  I rely on Windows Defender for my security support.  I am quite confident that this is generated by Microsoft.  Are you running 1903 on any machines you have access to?  I’d be curious to see if this is something unique to my installation as a result of some setup choices I’ve made.  If you can shut this off on a 1903 it would help me diagnose my own situation.

            • #1898801

I’m running 1903 on multiple machines, and I can access the option. I don’t have a firewall or AV-free device handy to test at the moment, but I’ll see what I can come up with.

Just an FYI… here are my available switches for selecting apps to turn off / on notifications in the general notifications area under settings:

              SettingsNotifications

      • #1898521

Thank you for that suggestion, but in my copy of Windows 10 1903 that option is not available anymore.

Already turned off and it doesn’t stop the notifications.

If you do not insist on Windows notifications at all, you can silence them by turning on the “Focus assist“.
It silences all notifications, but this was like holy grail when I started to distribute Windows 10 machines to people, who are used to Windows 7. There was always something poping-up in the bottom right corner.
Usually, you should turn off notifications for each apllication separately, but I dont wanna waste my time. If you open START and type FOCUS, you can name applications, that are allowed to popup.
I do not understand why is there Xbox app in default for “priority only” setting. Again, this proves to me, that Microsoft does not have a clue what PRO users are looking for and their thinking is like 4 year old child with all that candy crush bulls**t in start menu and so on.. Use the third radiobutton to shut down notifications. (sorry for czech version of Windows)

Just an aside… is that Czech?

I love that there’s no translation for “multitasking!”

        🙂

Little bit off-topic, but yes, that is Czech. Mutlitasking stays the same 😀 maybe better to name it like original. There is less confusion. Please do not translate into something like “víceúlohování” 😉

Hello, and thank you for that suggestion.  I’ll have to read more about the focus setting.  That is one I’m not familiar with.  I don’t really want to eliminate all of my notifications though.  I have a couple of apps, like MS Outlook email, that I want to receive notifications on.  But Focus is something I would like to learn more about.  Thanks again.

I’ve tried everything from GPO to turning off notification – nothing worked as I wanted.

So if you can’t beat them – join them…

Open the firewall advanced setting and create a custom rule in the firewall private profile inbound rule that allows ALL.  Leave the firewall ON – to allow all.

I even tried to change the default action in the firewall private profile inbound from Block(default) to Allow, but this caused the notification for disable firewall to keep coming back.

      Tested on Windows 10 Pro – 2004

It sounds to me as if Windows Defender is somehow tied (hooked) into the firewall and won’t allow it to disable
      (in the name of security)
Suggestion: May a 3rd party AV that switches off Windows Defender in order to regain control release the firewall?
It’s MSFT and anything is a workaround these days..

Out of interest, why do you want the firewall off? Is it blocking something you need?

      cheers, Paul

The answer lies within the first sentence. Its users habit, I think. Maybe he has some robust firewall/router device.

I’ve always turned off Windows firewall and relied on my router for firewall security.

I’d rather have both running, especially as Windows firewall will block outgoing connections from things it doesn’t know about.

          cheers, Paul

I’ve found at least 2 or 3 different places that are supposed to disable firewall notifications, but even with them all turned off the pop ups persist. We use a 3rd party physical firewall with VPN. For the VPN to function, the Windows firewall MUST be disabled. It’s incredibly frustrating that there appear to be options built in to accomplish the muting of the constant notifications, but none of them actually work for that purpose.
