• Firmware update for system drive?

    Hello; I “know” my ways around software for way too many years but my hardware not-know-how-to is somewhat limited.

    Here comes my question: I have a medium small (250GB) Samsung SSD as my C: drive in my box. The Samsung Magician program keeps telling me that there is a firmware update and I should install it. I know enough that an image backup immediately before the firmware update is a must incl. having the required restore CD, that’s a given.

    But still I am hesitant because it’s the C: drive and I currently would not have the time for a repair if something goes wrong.

    I solicit some input from Windowssecrets’ hardware gurus on the question if it is wise and/or safe do just start the firmware update.

    TIA
    Eike

      Eike,

      If your machine is running just fine and you’re busy I’d say just wait. Firmware updates will usually only make the device work a little faster or more efficiently, unless of course it is malfunctioning. As with driver updates I’d say “if it ain’t broken don’t fixit!”.

      When you have the spare time you are correct that an Image Backup is a MUST. I’d also check out the Samsung website for particulars on what features/fixes the update is providing and if you can download the entire update first or if you need the Internet to complete the update. If it can be downloaded, maybe to a bootable USB drive, I’d do that and disconnect the machine from the internet for the duration of the update. I’d also prefer to boot from USB/CD or at least into Safe Mode to make sure nothing that normally runs in your setup has a chance to interfere with the Firmware Flash procedure. I’d also make sure the power to the machine is a stable source and if possible the machine is connected to a UPS JIC!

      Of course, this is my over cautious self speaking and YMMV!

      Good Luck!

      Thanks RG;

      I especially appreciate the tips about checking out Samsung and if possible doing it off-line and from Safe Mode.

      Why didn’t I think of that? Age? no way… ;;-)
