So, I’m assuming that, since both KB3178690 and KB3191855 are shown as hidden in my Windows Update Mini-Tool, both will need to be installed after we reach Defcon 3? Is this correct? Even though both are the same size at 24.68mb? Looks like MS should pull KB3178690.

You’re free to skip KB3178690. KB3191855 supersedes it.

According to what I have read, if you have installed the previous version of KB3191855, you need to uninstall it first before installing the later version with the fix.

Abbodi is reporting that the new patch supersedes the old one.

Hi PKCano, when was this previous version of KB3191855 released? Or do you have to uninstall KB3178690? Thanks for the answer, Woody, you, Noel Carboni and several others here have made my life with Windows a lot easier!

I misread here https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3191855/march-28-2017-update-for-excel-2010-kb3191855
They give instructions for uninstalling the patch, but not uninstall/reinstall. Only if you want to remove it.
My mistake.

Per Microsoft metadata rules, optional updates do not replace security updates
until they become important

nonetheless, they are actually supersede them

KB3191855 is safe to install if it shows up in Windows Update. It replaces KB3178690.

I’m still confused. I have not installed 3178690, but since it contains security fixes, I should install it and then immediately after install 3191855? Or should I only install 3191855?

It is only offered if Windows Update determines that it is needed by the system. So if it shows up CHECKED in Windows Update, then install it. It is safe.

At this moment only 3178690 is available on my system for Excel 2010. So do I have to install this “faulty” patch before I’m offered the “good” one?

KB3191855 is there, but not listed under Security Updates. Still it’s an important update.

If you were to avoid generating a trigger for the Windows Vista Update Search issue, you’d have to leave the Security Update for Excel 2010 out of the official supersedence chain.

This has been done before with KB3187022, a full-fledged successor of triggering KB3177725.

If you have Excel 2010, Windows Update will always offer 3191855, right? If you have 3178690 installed, it will offer it as a fix for that. If you DON’T have 3178690 installed, it will offer it because 3191855 also contains the security thingies that were originally in 3178690?

 

Or do you mean in a general way, that WU only offers updates WUdetermines your system needs?

I still have both on my Win 7 WU.  The old one – KB3178690 has “Security” as the first word in the description and is unchecked.  The new one – KB3191855 does not have the word Security at all and is checked.  Both are 24.7 MB.  All the other Office 2010 updates have Security as the first work in the description.  Hasty sloppyness on MS’s part?

Of course I’m not doing anything yet but after all this back and forth talk, I’d like to know what I’ll really need to do.  Hopefully, maybe the old update will disappear!  That would be nice.

You’ll be perfectly fine with installing KB3191855 only. It’s going to make offering of KB3178690 disappear.

Classifying KB3191855 one step below security has the positive effect of not generating a new trigger of the Vista Update Search issue.

OK. Thank you, VZ. This is the way I’m planning on going with these updates on my computers:

1) Install KB3191855 … after the coast is clear, of course!
2) Hope that KB3178690 will simply disappear afterwards … but with good old WaaS, you never really know.

After all this discussion the word seems to be only install K3191855. The previous one 3178690 is showing in my list of updates but is “unchecked”.   I wonder why MS just didn’t remove the bad update when it replaced it with 3191855?  Thanks VZ.

In Windows Update today I had 2 important updates: 3178690, unchecked, and 3191855, checked. I installed 3191855 and restarted the computer. I can confirm, as was already said in this thread, that afterwards 3178690 had indeed disappeared.

We blocked and rolled back the bad update KB3178690 on our WSUS servers a few days ago.  Any workstations that had picked that up successfully removed it by Wednesday.  Last night we allowed the replacement KB3191855 across the board.  It succeeded (and in most cases a reboot was NOT required on Windows 7 or 10.)

So “supercede” status or not, the old one is not a pre-req for the new version of this Excel 2010 patch.
