    Aloha all,
I have a large spreadsheet (28 cols x 55,000 rows) that, when I use AutoFilter, produces a msgbox saying “Fixed Items Will Move”. The msgbox appears 15 to 30 times, without any correlation to the data that I can determine. AutoFiltering on different values in the same column produces a different number of msgboxes. Sometimes no msgboxes appear. Any insight as to why this is happening?
    Mahalo!

Do you have floating objects on the worksheet, such as cell comments?

Yes I do. There were 11 column headers with coments attached. To see what effect, I cleared all but one comment, on the 28th column and re-opened the file. I’m still getting 31 or 28 or 33 msgboxes upon AutoFiltering on a value.

Could you attach a reduced copy of the workbook (only a few rows) that demonstrates the problem? Remove all sensitive information.

I’ve tried reducing the first file as well as reducing a second large file with the same problem, but I can’t reproduce the msgboxes in the reduced versions (yet).

An “Aha!”: In the first file I cleared all comments from the entire range, and now I have no msgboxes popping up. I guess I must have attached comments somewhere in the body of data as well.

And a mystery: The second large file has 44,000 rows, with 13 comments in random locations within the data. So far, every AutoFilter I’ve tried has produced 3 msgboxes. What’s up with that.

Well, even though the number of msgboxes is still a mystery, it’s clear to me that the comments are the culprit. I’ll just evaluate for myself the relative value of in-data comments vs. AutoFiltering uninterrupted by msgboxes. OK, did that — the comments go.

            Mahalo Hans, for your efforts,

There may be objects with zero width and height.

          – remove autofilter
          – press F5 (GoTo), special, objects
          – hit Del to remove all of them

          Now set autofilter back on.
