I want to link to an Excel spreadsheet to my database but Access forces numeric data to number even though it is formatted text in the spreadsheet. Is there a way to force Access to accept the text format?

You could prefix the numeric values in the Excel worksheet with an apostrophe. This forces the values to be interpreted as text.
If you can’t or won’t modify the worksheet, you could create a query based on the linked table that converts the field to text, e.g.

      TextField: CStr([NumberField])

You can use BBCodes to format your content.
