• Forced Update to 21H2

This is a double post, but I felt the need to “warn” 1803 users while asking “modern” Windows 10 users whether they had any idea what was going on, in the more active forums.

I installed Windows 10, 1803 in January 2020 as a means of using newer hardware that Windows 7 didn’t support (which turned out to be a non-issue as modded drivers permitted me to continue using it in the end anyway)

Since that time, I prevented it from updating entirely.

But just today I found out that it had updated to 21H2 on October 8th without my noticing (it’s my parents’ computer)

Is anyone else aware of what happened here?! I have tried SO hard to prevent Windows 10 from every updating, and seemed to have been successful for nearly 3 years now, despite being on Windows 10 Home.

What must I do to stop Microsoft and their grubby little hands from changing my desktop background and forcing Edge, Cortana, News, telemetry and other such nonsense on me everytime I turn around for half a second?

    Any others still running 1803?

I see they were forcing updates in May of 2019 but like I said I’ve been without for nearly 3 years soo… that doesn’t seem like it should be a factor…?

Microsoft’s policy with Windows 10 is that when you are running a version that is out-of-support or getting close to out-of-support it will automatically upgrade you to the currently supported version.

At one time there was a notification on the WU settings page.

I understand that, but why would it have taken this long to “take”?

I see now this wasn’t actually the first time, and that I wasn’t actually on 1803 at all.

Rather I was updated to 1909 on August 17th, 2021. Still over a year after my installation but does make more sense.

This latest 21H2 update first tried to install on July 6th I see and I guess it has been trying ever since. Perhaps this is because of my “active” hours schedule, which would normally prevent updates from 6AM to midnight, and maybe my parents ended up leaving the PC on overnight on those days.

      Very frustrating.

Given that it’s a machine that it doesn’t sound like you monitor 24/7 I wouldn’t block updates but would ensure that it’s kept on a supported platform.
