Example: I have been given the dimensions of a corridor by the designer of a building. The dimensions are 8 feet x 27.75 feet. If I multiply that out, using Excel, the answer is exactly 222 square feet. The total square feet number that must be reported to the State of California for this type of corridor, however, is only 1/3 of the total. The architect tells me he reported 73.26 square feet to the State. The “factor” they use is .33 . . . . I have been just multiplying the number of square feet reported to the State by 3 and assuming that would return the actual total square feet of any given space.

Am I doing this incorrectly? Math is NOT my forte . . .

    Thanks again

It sounds like some one has their feet and yards mixed up!!!!

      8′ x 27.75′ =222 sq ft

Convert to yards by dividing by 3

      8/3 x 27.75/3 = 2.7 x 9.25 = 24.7 sq yds

      bbbbuuuttt

      2.7 x 27.75 = 74 sq yds

I think somebody has made a mistake by not dividing by 3

Yards are not involved . . . at all! I’ve attached a little itty bitty sample of what the heck I’m talking about – perhaps that will clear what is obviously very, very muddy waters – up.

          The formula for D2 is:
          =C2*0.33

Your bio is terrific – had to throw that out there.

Thank you for the formula – you helped me understand one side of the problem – Hans provided the other side – now I’m balanced – HA!

          The factor is exactly 0.33, not 1/3 = 0.33333333…
Not idea why they use this, but it you want to calculate the “real” area from the number provided by them, divide it by 0.33.
For example, if you’re given the number in D2 (73.26), use the formula =D2/0.33 to recover the number 222.
