    Hi folks,

I have a problem with a workbook we use at work to monitor the daily count of people coming into our library. I made a new version for the 04-05 fiscal year (essentially made a copy of the 03-04 version, which worked fine, cleaned out the data and adjusted the dates), but, in this new workbook, the formulas don’t update or display results when data is input. For example:

A1 contains daily gate-count data for Monday
A2 contains daily gate-count data for Tuesday
B2 contains a formula showing how many people came into the library in the 24 hours between the times the counts were taken: =INT((a2-a1)/2)

If A1=10 and A2=16, then B2 should display “3” (The gate counts exits and entrances, so we divide by 2)

This has worked for years, ever since I originally made this sheet in Excel 95. Yet now it’s either not running the calculation or it’s not displaying the result. I’ve tried “praying to Effwun,” but can’t find anything in the help. Any ideas would be appreciated, since this has me confused. confused3

(I should note that this machine runs WinXP version 5.1.2600, and the previous workbook for fiscal 03-04 worked fine.)

Tools | Options | Calculation is set to Automatic?

Are there any User Defined Functions built into other parts of the worksheet?

If the worksheet is old, it might have been corrupted by repeated recopying. Save it as a Web Page (HTML), and then re-save the .htm page version as Excel.

Post back if you need further help.

My thanks to both of you! The “automatic calculation” box was indeed unchecked. Funny thing is, I don’t know why that happened, since the old workbook worked fine in Excel 2002. Oh, well. I’ll put it down to one of the mysteries of MS Office and be glad that everything’s fine now.

There could be a number of things causing this. The first thing to check is to select Options from the Tools menu. Click on the Calculation tab and make sure that Automatic in the calculations section is selected.

If this is not the problem, it will save a lot of time if you could upload a copy of the workbook sanatized of any confidential information.
