I fequently forward or CC mail to an associate who has AOL for his online service. He is complaining that occasionally, the mail I send him comes to him in a .zip format. It is not consistent, but we think it has something to do with forwarded e-mails & e-mails where I reply to the party who sent the original e-mail & CC to the guy who’s getting the zipped files.

Has anyone heard of this? At this point, I’m not sure if it’s an Outlook Issue or an AOL issue or a user issue.

how big are the files and is only the AOL guy getting the zips? does it happen always on multiple files or also on singles?

could be something on your computer zipping large files. i understand quickview pro offers the feater as does one of the zip programs.

i don’t think aol does it, they usually do mim.

Not sure how big the files are. How do I check their size?
I will check if there is another software program zipping e-mails. Funny thing is that it doesn’t zip .jpg files which are much larger. What is quickview pro?

I should probably note that I also use Word my default e-mail editor. I don’t create e-mail in Word per se, I just have the option clicked in Outlook.

in windows explorer, show details (views icon on the tool bar)

if you don’t know what quick view is, it’s likely not the culprit

does it happen only if you send two or more?

I think it’s only when I reply to a person & CC to the other person. The CC’d person gets the .zip file. He also gets it if I forward a message to him. At first, we thought it had something to do with my signature file, because it had graphics in it. I got rid of them & the .zip files stopped. Temporarily, that is.

I haven’t noticed if it only happens when I send more than one to this person, but I’ll watch for it.

sounds like it’s a problem with multiple attachments and AOL’s ability to handle them.

are you using plain text format? HTML is an attachment, as is RTF.

Mary,
Yes, I’m using Plain Text format with the uuencode option selected. Do you think I should install Quickview Pro? How do I do this?

• #1780415

no on quick view, use mime not uuencode. that shouldn’t cause zips, but who knows.

• #1780417

Thanks, I’ll switch to mime.
Should I uninstall Quickview if it is installed?
How do I find out if it is installed?

maybe hte guys using it can tell you if it has an option to not compress mail, i think it does but since i don’t use it, i dont know. look on your add/remove programs list or see if there is a start menu shortcut for it. the version i tested a few years ago added an icon to the tray.

• #1780428

I’ll check it out in the add/remove programs list. Thanks for all your help!

I just wanted to say Thank you! I have a client who has been trying to fix the problem of having attachments automatically zipped. I have had her try a number of things. I saw your post and then asked her … voila, she has Quickview Pro installed and now this problem is fixed.
