While I use an FTP client for most of the ftp work I do, once in awhile, if I’m already in IE, I’ll just type the ftp address in to IE to go to the site and do something quickly. Lately, if I type an ftp address (ftp.microsoft.com, for example), I cannot get into any ftp site with IE. I eventually get a message that says I don’t have the rights, or something similar. I think I need to change a setting somewhere, but cannot determine what that should be. My regular ftp client does work fine.

Thanks a lot for any assistance.

    Sincerely,

    Bob Harris confused

Check your security setting. If it’s anonymous, and the site requires a password, it would make sense to get that message.

Thank you very much for your reply to my question. I apologize for not getting back sooner…
I tried your suggestion to no avail. I cannot even get into my own FTP site with IE at the moment. The process and message is like this:
First the little flashlight waves back and forth for about 20 or 30 seconds, then the following message appears:
An error occurred opening that FTP server. Make sure you have permission.
        Details:
The connection with the server was reset.

As I said, this happens with all FTP sites that I visit through IE. Not at all through the FTP client. It’s a bit problematic because a lot of file transfers are done this way in my business. I’m sure it’s a setting somewhere…..unless IE has become corrupted.

Thanks for any thoughts on this one.

        Hi Jefferson,
I found the fix to the problem and, in the chance that this problem may come up for another I thought I should share it.

In Tools > Internet Options > Advanced, there’s a choice to check or uncheck an item called “Enable Folder View for FTP Sites”. Somehow that became checked on two of my PC’s. Unchecking it fixed the problem. How it became checked I don’t know.

I found it by comparing item for item each security and Advanced item on this PC with a laptop I have that was not experiencing the problem.

        Thanks again for your response.

        Sincerely,

        Bob Harris

Wow, that setting certainly sounds harmless. Glad you found an answer. I’m displaying the picture here for anyone who is looking for it, since it’s packed in with general items:
