I have this strange problem in Windows 2000 that seems to only affect FTP connections. When I connect to my ISP with WS_FTP Pro, it hangs upon connection when it tries to get a file listing from the host (an automatic step that occurs upon connection). I figured it was only a problem with WS_FTP Pro so I tried to connect to my ISP from the command prompt. Even there, I succeed in connecting fine, but when I try to get a simple file listing (i.e. ls, dir, list) it hangs there with no response. I have no idea what caused this but I have tried investigating everything I can think of. This problem seems to have suddenly appeared and I cannot associate it with any particular thing I have done.

I am running Windows 2000 Professional w/ SP2 recently reinstalled. I also use BlackIce Defender and ZoneAlarm Pro. frown

Why do you run TWO firewalls?
Anyway, try turning them both off before attempting FTP transactions. I find that some ISPs prefer it that way…

        Hi MerC,

Actually, I have tried that and it doesn’t seem to have any effect. I’ve even removed ZoneAlarm to see if that would help. Notta. Of course, it USED to work fine with both running. The only thing I can think of is the installation of either the Win2K SP2 or Office 2000 and its SP2. Of course, there are many, many other programs I’ve installed here and there to try and any one of them could have damaged something, but I need to find out what it was that got ‘broken’. I also have another PC beside this one that now has Win2000Pro and it works fine with FTP. I am going to install SP2 and see if still works.
