I have a quick few questions about getting the 20H2 upgrade through Windows Update. I have set my Windows 10 Pro V1909 laptop as indicated here and have the TRV set to 20H2. This laptop is slow to check for updates – sometimes going 5-7 days in between checks, so can I do the following:

    • Hide everything visible in wushowhide and wait for 20H2 to show up there
    • Once I see only 20H2 in wushowhide, having hidden everything else, go into Windows Update and click “check for updates”

Will doing that allow me to download the upgrade and not anything else?Or are there other things that aren’t visible in wushowhide that might download if I click on “check for updates”?

I’d like to plan to do it in the next few days and I know that I could be waiting longer than that if I just let it check by itself to see that upgrade available to be downloaded.

    Thanks!

Hide everything visible in wushowhide (be sure you don’t have 20H2 hidden while you are at it).
      Restart your computer.
Go back and verify 20H2 is the only thing showing available in wushowhide. (IF not, keep hiding until it is).

If anything is visible in the WU queue, you need to clear it first.
You can do this by clicking “Pause” once, then immediately clicking “Resume updates”. This will cause WU to check for updates, which should start the download/install of 20H2.

If there is nothing in the queue, clicking “Check for updates” should give you 20H2.

Great – thanks! I thought that it was possible to get it without waiting for it to show up in WU – just didn’t want to run into anything unexpected.

But I won’t be able to do it till I see 20H2 in the wushowhide queue, right? I’ll keep checking it and follow your instructions once it appears.

        Thanks again!

Yes, 20H2 needs to be the only thing in the wushowhide queue, b/c that indicates what’s available for install.
What you see in the WU queue, though, is what will download/install. That’s why you have to get it to clear first.

Great – thanks! I set the TVR to 20H2 last night and checked wushowhide earlier today and it wasn’t there yet, so I’ll keep checking and make sure everything is clear before I go ahead. I was hoping to be able to get to it tomorrow or over the weekend, so hopefully it will become available there soon.

            Thanks for the help!

Another thing to check – be sure you don’t have Feature Updates deferred with the pulldown switch under Windows Update\Advanced Settings or in GP.

Hmmm…I guess I’d better check that since I did have those deferred to avoid any unexpected upgrades beyond 1909. Will check that, too. 🙂

            • #2359756

OK – checked that – No 20H2 yet. Feature Update is set to 0, and it is on the semi-annual channel. Is that right?

Also, in Services – WU setting is where I left it after the last wushowhide clearing:

              WU

It is set to Manual/Stopped. Should that be changed?

And once the 20H2 upgrade is started – how long might it take? I have a somewhat slower connection, but the SSD in the laptop is fast. Is it something I should keep an eye on or can it be left overnight to do its thing?

              Thanks again!

The WU Service should start when it checks for updates.

If you have slow connections, the download will take a while. There is no telling on the time the installation will take, but it requires clicking the restart button after the download/install.

I would count on 4 hours – you don’t have to sit in front of it, but it’s a good idea to look in occasionally to be sure everything is progressing normally and to catch the manual restart.

If there is nothing in the WU queue, and you hide everything else in wushowhide, I’d say do the Pause/Resume thing whenever you’re ready and have the time.

Oh, yes. BTW, you DO have a recent image backup, right? If not, make one first. 🙂

OK – good to know. So I’ll try to start it when I can watch it now and then and click restart as needed.

I do – I have several Macrium images of the SSD and the HHD drives, plus manual copies of some of the more important documents and pics – plus the FF and TB profiles in case something happens to those programs – all on separate external drives. I do plan to run one more Macrium backup before I start the upgrade, too  – though I have several very recent ones.

Hopefully it will all be able to be done tomorrow or over the weekend. Just checked and nothing in wushowhide yet.

Thanks for the guidance and suggestions! Will let you know how it goes! 🙂

              A further wushowhide question…

I went into wushowhide this morning to be sure that the queue was cleared, and to check on 20H2. I did the hiding/clearing process of all that were there – some Realtek and Intel driver?? updates. I thought they were all cleared, but when I checked, there were still 3 showing – all Realtek. I tried it again – none were able to be hidden. Did it one by one, and still none were hidden.

              Here’s what’s left there:

              Realtek

So – will these download along with 20H2 IF it ever shows up? Or is there another way to hide them? Or, should I look at the Realtek site, find them and download them from there to get rid of them off the wushowhide list?

My WU says it last checked 3 days ago – that is still not showing anything…

              Thanks!!

Go into Group Policy, under Windows Update.
There is a setting “Do not include drivers with Windows Update.”
Open that up and enable it.
              It may help.

See the top screenshot in #2177509 to locate it.

Thanks – I checked and that was already enabled, so does that mean that even if those are on the wushowhide list, they won’t be downloaded?

Not even sure what those Realtek ones are – I can’t find them in a search.

            • #2359979

If they are in in the WU queue when you update, they will download/install.

What I did instead of waiting for Windows update to finally show the update was to use the Update Assistant available at Download Windows 10 (the blue button right at the top that says “Update now”)

      • Note: the Update assistant is not the same thing as the Media Create Tool available further down the page

I used it on both my desktop and laptop to upgrade from 1909 to 20H2 and it was quick (40 mins on the desktop and 55 mins on the laptop to get fully back up and running)

BTW, my internet provider is Google Fiber so my download speeds are typically > 900 Mbps but my laptop uses WiFi and tops out at 500 Mbps. If your connect is slower, it’ll obviously take longer than those times to complete your upgrade.

      Good luck!

This is a quick thank you to Aleir and pretty much everyone that posted a comment here … in particular I was confused by the various options available here, and after downloading the update file from the link in the post, I simply right clicked on the file and it started to update and eventually the process was complete to where I am up to 21H1 — hopefully going beyond 20H2 is ok but after 3 attempts yesterday (Sat 5-29) using the “Check for Updates” each time winding up still with v1909 all seems to be working as it should.

Obviously time will tell but at least I am closer to where I want to be thanks to the posts found here.  Thanks again …. TGH

Were LHiggins to (Now) Clk the Update Now button on the Oct 2020 20H2 page (below)  he would, after install, need to let WU recognize that X CU’s need installing and run those? With “20H2 Via WU” install ….. THAT will ALL be done in the Same Process?

If the update was done ONLINE, the result would be the latest (current) version (20H2) updated to the latest Build (April’s updates) b/c the online installation includes all the updates.

If it’s done OFFLINE, the install would be the latest (current) version (20H2) up to date as of the date of the ISO created or the downloaded installer. At that point, the User would have the option to use Windows Update to update to the latest Build, or manually download/install the CU of the desired date from the Catalog.

Since Win10 updates are CUMULATIVE, you only need the latest one. You do not have to install each month’s update consecutively.

Does this method allow you to just do an in place upgrade – not change or delete anything else? I don’t want to have to reinstall any of my programs or lose data (even though I have backups), and I don’t want to be forced to create a MS account. Does doing it this way keep everything the same except upgrade from 1909 to 20H2?

…will ALL be done in the Same Process?

Yes, good question! Looking forward to the reply! Thanks!

In Feb I used the — Update Now — button to go from 1909 to 20H2 — and Nothing Else was affected (apps, etc.). In MY case I DISabled (Not Uninstall) the Conexant Driver I showed and the 20H2 Install Replaced/Preserved the same driver data.

Per PKC above with Upgrading Online you should get the latest Updates included. I’m a Local Acct guy in W10 Pro and it was just a 1,2,3 process with 1.5 hours involved. All else appeared / behaved the same  after 20H2 Upgrade.

      W10 Pro 22H2 / Hm-Stdnt Ofce '16 C2R / Macrium Pd vX / GP=2 + FtrU=Semi-Annual + Feature Defer = 1 + QU = 0

As Craig pointed out, the Update assistant is an in-place update and, like him, using it didn’t change any of my existing software.

The only problem I encountered “after-the-fact” was I had to reinstall my Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client S/W with driver signing disabled to get it working again.

That happens because, even though the Cisco VPN drivers “are” signed (right-clicking the driver files and checking the signatures shows they’re all OK), for some reason Windows refuses to install them because they’re “unsigned“??

Quick update – looks like I may need to use the Update Assistant info, since my laptop checked for updates on its own this morning and there were none – no 20H2 showing in WU or in wushowhide. So I guess I’ll pick a day during the week to manually upgrade it as suggested. Thanks for that info since it looks like waiting for WU to see that upgrade may take a while longer than I’d like to wait.

Also – a wushowhide question about those Realtek updates I mentioned above. Three – actually 2 – one is there twice – are showing in wushowhide as available to be hidden – but those same ones are also showing on the already hidden list. So which will actually take precedence – the ones that are hidden or the ones that aren’t?  They look the same to me:

      RealtekA

      Realtek2A

      Thanks again!

I wrote about the unreliable wushowhide .

Just use WUmgr or Wumt to hide/un-hide updates.
