• Getting IE6 (and 7) to work (ie 6 & 7)

    Hi Guys,

I run firefox and thunderbird, both which work fine so basically here is nothing wrong with my internet or networking connection.

A while ago IE6 stopped working in that the browser would come up and attempt to open a page but just sit there with the little flag waving but nothing else. As there are occasions when I need to use IE I decided yesterday to download IE7 and hoped that that would fix the underlying problem. Now IE7 sits there with the tab saying connecting and thats it.

Anyone got any words of wisdom regarding this?

Have you checked your firewall settings ???

      • #1034878

        Yes,
The local firewall is off and the other computers on the network all have access out with IE

A few years ago one of the computers on my home network suddenly lost internet access. The other computers worked fine. I turned off my McAfee Firewall program, checked all the settings and generally had a bad day trying to get back on line. I tried everything. Finally gave up and called my IP provider. After trying this and that and the other thing he asked me to remove McAfee. I harrumped that I had shut it off. But to humor him I uninstalled it. Bingo, I was back on line. It seems that McAfee had updated itself and decided to protect me to the ultimate by shutting off my internet access. Turning it off didn’t help. Needless to say I don’t use McAfee products any more. Just my two cents.

This is a continuation of the problem.

Can anyone tell me how to reset the IE registry settings?

As I noted in my first post, Firefox and Thunderbird work fine and so does any other program that tries to access the internet. IE loads as far as the first page saying connecting and gets no further. This began with ie6 and a update to ie7 did not fix the problem. I assume that there is a registry setting somewhere that is screwed somehow that ie7 did not overwrite as it was assumed to be correct.

I have tried with the virus scanner disabled and I run no other guardian type software. The internal firewall is also disabled and every other computer on the network here has ok access through the firewall/router that we run.

I really would prefer not to have to reinstall windows to fix this problem.

What is reported when you run the diagnostic program in IE7?

        • #1050368

The diagnostics reported that the http, https and ftp(passive) was fine but some sort of problem with ftp(active) I’m at home at the moment so I can’t report it absolutely. It was definitely one of the ftp’s though.

        • #1050472

slightly off topic but i dont have that “diagnose connection problems” on my drop down from tools. Is it hidden somewhere and needs activating?

          • #1050485

Are you using IE 6 or IE 7?
It is NOT on IE 6

its actually a plugin and can be disabled which means it won’t show

            • #1050582

Have you tried setting running IE 7 without any addins (All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)?

It is NOT an add in on IE 7, it is there by default, on all of my IE 7 installs.

It may be present by default, but it *is* listed as a browser add-on in Tools | Internet Options…, Programs tab, Manage Add-ons.

            • #1050621

              Ok, I missed it. blush

I’m confused. I dont seem to have this add on, a screen shot of my Tools | Internet Options | Program Tab …Manage add-ons. I am in the correct place?

            • #1050764

It is the correct place. Which version of IE are you using?

              Internet Explorer 7

              Version: 7.0.5730.11

              Update Versions:0

            • #1050789

I’m with Hans. I’m sure I did not explicitly install that but I have it. Take a look at How to use Reset Internet Explorer Settings (RIES). Maybe a reset will help. When you ‘press’ the Tools button is “Diagnose Connection Problems…” there?

            • #1050799

Not inclined to try the reset at the moment as dont want to lose all the settings Ive made but thanks for the link, may be something to try later on. Meanwhile when I press tools this is the drop down menu and wherever I look in manage add ons the one we want is just not there

            • #1050804

See the attachment for where it is on my system. If a Reset does not fix it you may have to uninstall and reinstall IE7.

I had to DL the KB914440 hotfix and install it, then get out of IE and go back in. There it is!

            • #1050811

Ah! The date and time of the folder for KB914440 on my PC coincides with the date and time I installed IE7. The Dutch language version of IE7 was released later than the English version – on Januari 3. My guess would be that the hotfix wasn”t included with the original release of IE7, but it was by the time the Dutch version was released.

            • #1050825

The date on mine is when I set this PC up. So, I got the hotfix then and did not realize it was not part of the base release.

Thanks Bob, good to know I wasn’t alone on this and you found the fix worked. Thanks also Hans & Joe for your input. Now I know that part of IE7 is missing I will uninstall and re install after the weekend when I have more time. I will post again to let you all know what happens crossfingers

            • #1050902

              Jeff,
Just download the hotfix and install it, you don’t have to uninstall IE7 to fix it.
Or did I read your last post wrong? sorry

            • #1051099

Bob, no you read me right. My thinking being that if my version of IE7 is incomplete with this tool missing, there may be other parts missing so just as well uninstall and start again with current download which should include everything. And to close this out that’s just what I did and low and behold the “Diagnose Connection Problems” is now in the drop down menu and as far as I can tell all settings have been saved and IE7 running ok. Well, an interesting little diversion for a few days wasn’t it?

            • #1051112

              Jeff,
Glad to see all is OK with the world again. clapping

              >>>>>Well, an interesting little diversion for a few days wasn’t it?

Keeps the grey matter active and the brain cells charged up.

            • #1050788

Or maybe it has to be downloaded seperately and is not automatically included with IE7? would this be it? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914440/en-us%5B/url%5D

            • #1050765

Yes, that is the correct place. I can’t explain that. It is present in the list on my PC, I haven’t explicitly installed it, and security is pretty tight – add-ins can’t be installed without my permission. (It wouldn’t be useful to post a screenshot since I have the Dutch language version of IE7).
