I’ve installed xp pro using vmware player in my windows 7 just built machine. I must admit that it was very easy to do and I like not having to install dual boot like I have done in the past plus it’s free. However, I have run into a problem with entering the xp product key. I can’t believe Microsoft is still trying to control this while no longer supporting xp. When I enter my product key xp is telling me that I have already used up all my installs and that I need to call Microsoft to get their permission to install it again. What nerve Microsoft has. Of course, they want you to purchase Windows 7 which I said I already have installed. As a result of this problem I cannot apply any updates. I am currently running XP SP2. Should I be concerned? If so how can I get around this problem since I have about 20 days to go before I need to register. I have googled this and have tried to make some mods to the register but could not find the entries to modify in my register. Anyone have any thoughts.

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerAugust 10, 2011 at 11:20 am #1292404XP support hasn’t ended yet, so your statement isn’t accurate. I think support will only end on 2014, so there are still almost 1,000 days of support for XP.
I know this may not be what you want to hear, but even if support had expired, they would still have the right to make sure their software is used only by those who have legal licenses.
A call will solve your problems. Though I had never to do it myself, I have read from several people explaining that Microsoft’s support promply helped with the activation, once the situation that lead to the call was explained to them.
