OK, I am trying to help a friend out. He has a W7 computer. He is not comfortable with computers.

Anyway, for awhile he was getting the icon that asked him about reserving Windows 10. He wants that gone as he is not interested in getting W10.

I went into control panel and removed the Windows Update that caused the issue (can’t remember the exact KB number right now).

Anyway, he just indicated that he is getting it again (he may be mistaken; I haven’t had a chance to check).

But, I do have a thought on this. He is set to automatically d/l and install Windows Updates. Is it possible that this update, after I deleted it, just came back and got automatically installed? If so, is there a way to prevent this and yet keep the setting about automatically installing updates?

      Mel,

“Ain’t no sunshine when you’re gone!”

Well, you’ll have plenty of sunshine as there is no way to get rid of it permanently with the exception of possibly editing the registry and there’s not enough pain looking at the icon to make me want to do that. YMMV Also MS seems to add it back in each update cycle.

If you feel the pain too much seethis article.

You can hide the icon in Taskbar properties. As far as I have seen so far, it stays hidden.

      Martin,

If I select “Only Show Notifications” it goes away but it does not survive a reboot. Do you have some other way of hiding it? Note: Win 8.1 Pro.

I selected Hide icon and notifications. The icon stays hidden through a re-boot and is only visible if you click on Show hidden icons.

Didn’t work for me (two Win7 systems).

Disabling the GWX tasks as in jwoods #3 post did work.

Curious – tried it on my other Win 7 PC, and on another one which isn’t mine – all work !

All are laptops, if that matters.

I had found this somewhere here at Windows Secrets:

To prepare Win7/8 systems for Win10, Microsoft has already released several related updates, some of them with vague descriptions. KB 3035583, for example, adds “capabilities for Windows Update notifications when new updates are available to the user.” KB 2952664 for Win7 SP1 makes “improvements to the current operating system in order to ease the upgrade experience to the latest version of Windows.” And KB 2976978 for Windows 8.1 determines “whether compatibility issues may be encountered when the latest Windows operating system is installed.”

      Other Win10-related updates for Win7 and Win 8 include KB 3050265 (Win7), KB 3050267 (Win8.1), and KB 3068708.

Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features and then click to see installed updates, then uninstall the one/s you do not want, then go to Windows Update and search for available updates and then right-click-and-mark the one/s you never again wish to see.

edit: KB 3035583 is the specific one you are asking about here.

The programs which run the W10 nag are GWX.exe and GWXConfigManager.exe. Both are in the System32 folder. If you disable these, you will not get the nag. They are installed via KB3035583, so of course if you uninstall that, they should not exist anyway.

Easy way is to open Task Scheduler and navigate to Microsoft > Windows > Setup > gwx.

Disable the two tasks in the gwx folder.

      Reboot.

Works like a charm! :clapping: Interesting that you can NOT delete the tasks only disable them.
