I use Norton Ghost 2003 for backing up my Windows XP system However, the new PC I just built did not have a floppy disk drive. How do I create a Ghost bootable CD-ROM?

If bootable CD-ROM is not easy to make, can an USB pen drive be acted like a floppy disk? Of course, the BIOS allows the USB disk booting.

I’ve only made a bootable CD a few times and it was back when we (work) were using Roxio software. I haven’t done one since I put Nero on THIS system. But with Roxio, all you had to do, besides selecting the choice to make a bootable CD, was have a working boot floppy available, from which Roxio could get the needed boot files. I don’t know if, after doing that, Ghost will actually run from the CD, you’ll have to try it.

Though I have Nero 5.5 which claims it can create bootable CD, I need to know how to make the bootable CD with Ghost in there.

F.Y.I.: I have not created a bootable CD from Nero 5.5 yet.

Have you checked the Nero HELP screens? It tells you exactly what to do, including DRAGGING the files onto the CD for the Ghost program.

Yes, Nero 5.5 can create a bootable CD by doing Floppy Emulation. If I understand it correctly, it means there must be a bootable floppy to copy from.

If the PC does have a floppy drive, there are two steps to create a bootable CD:
Step 1: create a bootable floppy disk from Ghost first.
Step 2: use Nero to create a bootable CD by using the Floppy Emulation.

However, the new PC does not have a floppy drive. I can not do the Step 1.

If you saved your image file directly to CD or DVD, then you do not need a recovery boot disk. Norton Ghost includes Ghost.exe if you save the image to CD or DVD.” You can open Ghost from windows…Start>>Programs>>Norton Ghost ! Hope this helps you.

I understand your point. However, since my system in C: and data in D: are big enough to fit 12 CDs, it takes too much time in burning onto CDs or recovering. It is much faster to back them up to another hard drive and recover them by using the bootable floppy disk. It will take over 100-minute to burn the Ghost file to a 5-CD set while It will take about 15 minutes to create a Ghost file on hard drive. The recovering will take the same time ratio.

To burn the CD set, I need to stay there to swap the disks!!

As Michael said, why not buy a floppy drive and use it? A lot easier to do than burning a CD just for that, I just bought a new Sony 3 1/2″ floppy at $8.50 US, to have as a spare.
I don’t know about you, but I still have a TON of floppies with lots of things on them, that I wouldn’t want to have to copy over onto CD’s, just for the sake of not having the drive to run them on.

It might be better just installing a floppy drive since they are cheap…about $15 US or so.
