    Hello.

I have W7 home premium. When Microsoft started force feeding me W10, I installed GWX Control Panel. I never uninstalled it.

Recently I noticed a bookmark in my Firefox browser.
When I click on it a file window opens to save.
    File name: GWX_control_panel.exe 4.4 MB
From: C:\Program Files (x86)\UltimateOutsider\GWX Control Panel

    Bookmark Name: GWX%20Control%20Panel.lnk
    Location:  file:///C:/Users/Public/Desktop/GWX%20Control%20Panel.lnk

The question is, How was this bookmark created and what is it doing in my bookmark list?
    I did not create it.

    Thanks, Sparky

I was going to include a image attachment, but did not see a file icon.

@sparky To attach a graphic file to your reply, use the Select File box below the text editor box. Once you have selected the file to add, click on Insert into Content, so that it shows in your post (otherwise, it isn’t visible unless you’re logged in, and needs to be opened separately to be viewed in full).

Kirsty, The “Select File” box is no longer there, it has been missing for a couple of days at least (at least it is for me).

Don't take yourself so seriously, no one else does 🙂

Kirsty – Missing for me too. Woody is aware of intermittent problems with the missing “Select file box” according to the following post for which he closed additional threads. https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/did-the-ability-to-post-upload-images-go-away

Thank you @cadesertrat and @sueska. Yes, I was alert to the intermittent issue some people are experiencing with not having access to Select File, but as the reference here was to not being able to find the file icon to be able to upload, I was ensuring that information was available about where it should be located.

I realise how frustrating these ongoing site issues are, which are becoming quite tiresome. It is just a faint wish that it resolves, and quickly 😉

I should have said ‘ The Select File Box is missing, instead of “I do not see a file icon”.
            Sorry about that.

Are you sure you did not do it?; I going with human error as the cause here. It is possible deliberately or not under the right conditions to drag and drop a desktop shortcut onto the bookmark star icon and create a bookmark. What you have typed out is what can be seen in a bookmark tooltip box and clicking the bookmark Firefox (and Waterfox) will try to save the executable.

I’m 100% sure I did not do it.

This might have something to do with the mysterious bookmark.
It seems as though the bookmark was created when the laptop battery died.
According to the event viewer the laptop battery died at 12:48:13 PM on ‎2/‎8/‎2019
Firefox browser says the bookmark was created 12:48 PM on ‎2/‎8/‎2019
Also the laptop was just coming out of sleep mode when the battery died.

The bookmark is the 2nd bookmark from the top of the bookmark list.
The GWX program has not been opened in months.
There is a GWX shortcut icon on the desktop.

Could this possibly be the cause?

Ya maybe? Was it a sudden loss or controlled shutdown? If Windows shutdown the computer due to critical low power, Firefox could have saved opened tabs for the session. However that bookmark of a desktop shortcut does not make sense without human interaction to me.

You can delete that desktop bookmark it should not cause harm, run chkdsk /F in Administrator mode to clean up any possible damage to be safe, and you might notice a performance gain when dealing (copy or moving operation) with many files at once.

It was a sudden loss shutdown, windows shutdown the computer due to critical low power.

I agree, the only way to recreate the bookmark, that I know of, is to right click the GWX desktop shortcut, click copy and paste it into the Firefox browser’s bookmark sidebar. Unless there is someone that knows how to paste the GWX desktop shortcut directly into the bookmark library.

I will run chkdsk /F  to clean up any possible damage.

            Thanks,

            Sparky

      It’s a bug, folks.

We’ll tackle it after the merge is over. Right now, swallowing the whale is our #1 priority….

      @Sparky
Try downloading and running adwcleaner to see if it throws anything untoward up.
