Even completely bypassed my proxy settings per possible solution to no avail. Ended up having to install the full installer and it appears to have installed fine (but didn’t get the end confirmation; the installer hanged). I did confirm at JAVA.com’s site that I had the latest and greatest. Is this the behavior that Oracle was implying would happen to XP OSes for EOS? Oh well. As I stated elsewhere, I would really like to install the Win7 64-bit OS since Sandboxie now works for Win7, but, not sure how my license will work since it was for my previous OS that died, so stuck with XP (not a bad thing for me; it’s still my crutch and am typing this now in my XP VM). Just spieling.

Was the previous OS a brand such as Dell, HP, Gateway, etc., or was it an Upgrade or Retail version? The OEM or branded version is tied to the computer it came with but the Upgrade or Retail version can usually be installed once more on a Replacement computer. It’s in the EULA/End User License Agreement.

AskWoody PlusAugust 5, 2014 at 5:49 pm #1462475I purchased an OEM disk which has always been used only for VM purposes. Even have the sticker taped to my Win8 case. I had a recent crash so I re-installed it again as a VM. Never had issues updated JAVA prior to this version. Even updated 7.65 with no hitch. Weird behavior for sure with the 7.67 update.

AskWoody LoungerAugust 6, 2014 at 10:16 am #1462522Interesting. I was going to suggest jumping over to 32-bit Java 8.11 runtime but noticed two things: It is still a developers release, not consumer and it no longer supports XP.
XP users who use OpenOffice or LibreOffice are soooooooo screwed.

I fixed that for you
System Requirements
WindowsFor certain features of the software – but not most – Java is required. Java is notably required for Base.

AskWoody LoungerAugust 15, 2014 at 10:17 am #1463971Last I heard, Java 7 update 65 is the last one for Win XP.
Yup, pretty disquieting IMHO. You raise an excellent point. I am surprised they still release version 7 updates sans XP support.

But that page doesn’t say one has to quit using JAVA on WinXP, just that it is no longer supported. The ‘downside’ to ending support for any Operating System is that folks who write third-party software will not get backup support from the producers of the OS so they are not going out on a limb to do new updates, can’t blame them for that if things don’t work well with a non-supported OS. Microsoft did the same with Microsoft Security Essentials, may still get definition updates for WinXP but since WinXP won’t be updated it may not work well.
Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"

AskWoody PlusAugust 21, 2014 at 1:56 pm #1464684Glad that it auto-installed (via update) for you Joe; again, I had to download the complete installer but that did work. Hopefully, if there’s to be another update, the update Java feature will work again. Still, I do understand that SUN will not test to see if their future updates are XP compatible so it’s now going to be the role of the dice for XP users.
