Following a recent Microsoft “update”, my lock screen (calendar) notifications stopped working.  After trying a number of possible fixes posted elsewhere online (none of them worked for me) I looked into the Focus feature in System-Notifications-Focus – and found in there the Do Not Disturb checkbox had been automatically selected following the recent  update. After I de-selected that option, I got my lock screen notifications back. So, this fix worked for me.

Despite the Do Not Disturb feature being de-selected elsewhere on my system by me – the Focus feature Do not disturb feature took override precedent over my preferred settings!

I know M/S is making Calendar redundant and is pushing Outlook(new), I wonder if crippling calendar notifications with the Focus Do Not Disturb “glitch” was a way to try to influence users to switch to Outlook (new). By the way, they seemed to have also changed the “try the new Outlook now – you can always switch back later” message to “now you have switched to Outlook (new) you can’t switch back and will be automatically redirected to Outlook (new)”. So, be warned, if you don’t want to be stuck with the “new” Outlook (new) feature, don’t select “Try it now” option.

      Doh! My fix busted.

Very concerning to witness M/S enforcement of its Outlook(new) onto MY machine over last few days. I won’t go into detail here about the countermeasures I attempted (unless asked) but it was a battle I eventually lost and the “new” Outlook was forced onto my machine.

This “new” Outlook calendar app now comes with associated links to M/S Office apps (of course) so it’s pushing M/S Office apps too while enforcing email links to its and other 3rd party providers. This is a straight forward security risk in my view because you have to consent to the email providers having access to your diary entries. Ok if you are a business that shares appointments with others but in my view (call me old fashioned) but a private diary calendar…is PRIVATE.

One of the features I most liked about the old M/S calendar was how it showed entries in the lock screen so the first thing I saw each day when I first switched on the machine was calendar reminders for the day. This was the function that was first ‘disabled’ by M/S. This notifications function is also disabled in the Outlook (new) app. M/S describes its new app as “still in the development stages” – why push an undeveloped product onto users? We know why.

So, when push comes to shove… (and it’s a lost cause trying to fight a bully) .. the best thing to do is walk away. I have removed the “new Outlook” crapware entirely from my machine.
