HDMI no sound

I want to connect my ACER laptop (with the latest Windows 10) to my TV using a HDMI cable.  The video signal is transmitted perfectly, but the sound still plays on the laptop.  I’ve tried on both an LG and a Samsung TV and have the same problem.  The “Sound Settings” only show the laptop speakers.

Any suggestions?  Thank you

Follow up. I used the same set-up with an older ASUS laptop and it works first time – plug and play. So it appears that there is something wrong or missing in the ACER.

Now, go through both laptops and compare the sound-related settings that they have in common. Since the laptops are two different brands, they may not have the same controller chip for their sound output, that’s why you can only compare the settings they have in common. Chances are that one of those settings is the “culprit” for your lack of sound from the Acer laptop via the HDMI cable.

Since both systems are laptops, see if you can do the comparison with them literally side by side to make things a little easier for yourself.

One more thought in addition to what I just stated above-the lack of sound output from the Acer via the HDMI cable could also indicate a physical problem with the HDMI port on the Acer. By that, I mean that either there’s possibly no signal going to the specific pin or pins that are supposed to send the audio output through the cable to be received by the device on the other end of the cable, or that there’s a problem with the pin/s in the Acer’s HDMI output jack that prevents them from making physical contact with the connector from the cable.

I don’t know how to alter BIOS – so reluctant to even start!

Doesn’t seem to have a HDMI audio feature – doesn’t appear in any of the sound settings that I can find.

PC is only two years old. It only has one HDMI port.

The fact that there is no HDMI showing in the Sound settings suggests that this is a software, not a broken HDMI port problwm – but maybe not!!

Sorry if you misunderstood, but I never meant for you to go looking in the machine’s BIOS, and I never stated that above. I meant for you to do as has been suggested below, and look in the sound settings within Windows.

Sorry if I made it seem as if you needed to look in BIOS at all.

After having read your response about having an Intel UHD 620 graphics setup, and having read others’ replies to you,

within graphics control panels, HDMI sound settings may reside

I would suggest looking in the properties of your graphics adapter (Intel 620 UHD) to see if there are any settings related to an HDMI source for sound. If there is at least a listing for an HDMI port for sound within those properties, then I would hope we can help you try to get that successfully enabled.

@Microfix and @EP can probably best guide you through the process.

When the ASUS is connected to the TV, the TV speakers are listed and cen be chosen as the output device.

When the ACER is connected to the TV, the only output option is the computer’s speakers.

Everything else is the same, HDMI cable, TV, same TV HDMI socket.

It seems that the ACER does not detect the HDMI connection to the TV speakers.

I am looking forward to your solution;  I had the same experience with a 1-year old Dell Inspiron on Windows 10 ver 1909.  That machine is current according to Dell Update, and it works fine, except for this audio problem.

Two things it could be… 1, HDMI sound turned off in firmware menus (“BIOS”); 2, missing driver for the HDMI audio feature.

Seen both.

Oh and then there was that one silly thing that had the audio feature only wired into *some* of the HDMI outputs, of which it had multiple. Unlikely on a laptop though.

And the oldest (desktop) graphics card I remember seeing with a HDMI output, didn’t have a sound chip – but it had a passthrough line, so you could wire your regular audio output into the graphics card to get audio in the HDMI.

Right-click on the little speaker icon on the notification area on the taskbar. Then choose “Open sound settings”.

Is there more than one option in “Choose your output device”?

The only output device is the laptop speakers, even when the video signal is showing on the TV. I imagine this is the problem but don’t know how to fix it.

Have you checked ‘manage audio devices’ that audio is set to HDMI ?

HDMI does not appear when I select manage audio devices – the only output device is the laptop speaker system.

what kind/model and/or series of Acer laptop PC are you using, WSepzcaw?
Acer Aspire, Acer Predator, Acer Swift, Acer Travelmate, etc. – which is it?

Run MSINFO32.exe from the run dialog box or run the Speccy tool to gather more information about your Acer laptop because that info in your 1st post is too vague

Does this particular Swift 5 model have a GeForce Graphics card or intel?
Reason I ask is, within graphics control panels, HDMI sound settings may reside to check over.

I’ve opened the Graphics Card Control Panel, as you suggested – see screenshot. I’ve selected each of the options but none has anything relating to sound or HDMI.

Yes, for both laptops.

ASUS shows TV as an output device when connected to TV via HDMI

ACER shows only laptop speakers as output device when connected to TV via HDMI.

Ok, to avoid any further distraction, I’m posting this response here to help everyone keep track of what’s been suggested.

What I was actually suggesting is the following: If you can access the old-fashioned Control Panel holdover from the Windows 7 days, do so and have it display either  large or small icons instead of by category. Once there, select the icon that simply says “Sound” (without the quotes, of course).

The other way of getting there is to right click on the sound/speaker icon in the system tray and select “Open sound settings” from the menu that comes up. Now, on the right side of that window, you’ll see listing in blue under the heading of “Related Settings” which will be in black color. Under that heading, one of the selections is “Sound Control Panel”. Click it.

Using either method, you should now see a window that’s displaying the items that Windows sees as outputs for sound from your computer. At the top of the window, you will also notice some tabs, and the one labeled “Playback” should be highlighted.

Looking at this, are your system speakers the only thing listed in the window, or are there a few others listed, but showing as “Disabled” beneath their listings?

I’m asking this question to help the others decide what may be the next step in getting your sound to go to the television speakers like you wish.

Only have the laptop speakers in the “Playback”, even when the laptop is connected to the TV with the HDMI. See image below. There are no disconnected or disabled speakers.

Doing the same thing with the other laptop, the TV speakers appear in the list when connected to the TV.

I just hdmi’d an Acer Aspire v15 V3-575G laptop to our Panasonic plasma.  Played something on You Tube and sound and video worked fine, sound only from TV, not laptop as it should be.  I just plugged it in, nothing else.

My Acer documentation is identical to yours, perfunctory.

(As an aside, this laptop has an NVidia graphics card in it but has never been set to use Nvidia HD Audio, so it’s similar to yours, uses Intel audio.)

Clicking on the Windows Sound icon, taskbar, far right, it said “panasonic tv intel display audio.”

Going into Control Panel>Sound, intel display audio was green checked as default for the TV.

With your laptop connected to the TV and video playing on the TV, follow my steps above. If intel display audio is not visible anywhere, updating the driver for Intel Graphics 620 will install the audio driver also.

Before doing that, it’s simpler to go to Control Panel>device manager and look for intel display audio in Sound Video and Game Controllers, it should appear.  Click on it, open driver tab and update the driver.  Windows will take you through the process, just pick what is suggested, the driver should already be in your laptop.  This may work, if not, stay in device manager, go up to display adapters, click on yours and update that driver.

One more thing to try before the big driver update is Troubleshooting, either in Control Panel>Troubleshooting>hardware and sound audio playback or Settings>Update and Security>Troubleshoot>Additional Troubleshooters>Playing Audio

If you use the Settings Gear Thing and not control panel, Control Panel is in C:\Windows\System32\Control Panel (or Control.exe). Also in Start Menu>Windows System>Control Panel.  Shortcut it if you want to keep using it; drag to desktop.

Use the .exe version; it’s easier to install.

Audio in Windows is amazingly confusing, every speaker set, every microphone and every input set has a name and a way of connecting together, sometimes many ways.  I have a small sound bar that decided it’s a monitor and it works, so I’ll let it continue to fool itself. 🙂

Downloaded the intel Graphics Drivers as suggested, and set it going. It updated all teh intel systems on the laptop, but

Internet says:

If you’re using a set-top or cable box: Make sure the volume is turned up. You also may need to go into the set-top box menu and select HDMI in the Audio Settings or Audio Coding section to pass the audio to the TV.

I came to this threat late, but I would start from the easiest – check the cable and TV settings.

I’ve tried with a different laptop (older ASUS) and it works fine.

When the ASUS is connected to the TV, the TV speakers are listed and can be chosen as the output device. Sound comes from TV speakers.

All the drivers listed on the ACER site for my laptop date from 2018 so I didn;t think there was any point in installing them.

However, I downloaded the INTEL HD graphics driver update as recommended by anonymous above, and it updated all the INTEL devices which I assume includes video.

No change – still no sound on the TV!!

Maybe a dodgy HDMI socket on the laptop is the cause – simplest solution – Occum’s razor?

Occums razor is good way of thinking.
Very interesting and frustrating issue it must be, but at this moment im out of ideas. Maybe TeamViewer should be used to troubleshoot this issue, but it seems to me like you tried everything possible and it really looks like some HW related issue.

Its not a major problem as I was able to use the other laptop so see my grandaughter singing at her concert on Zoom last night – which was the point of the exercise. And if the need arises again, that should still be an option.

Interestingly, I have another sound issue with the ACER. When I am Zooming with it the sound at the other end does not always work – sometimes fine, sometimes intermittent, sometimes non-existent. (I can hear the other participants fine). I had a discussion here, thought it was sorted and then it happened again. Being intermittent made it really annoying, so I gave up and just use the ASUS now for Zooming.

So maybe there is a problem with the sound card. Above my pay grade to deal with!

As long as the ASUS is working, I will manage.

I’m the anonymous poster for post numbers 2320370, 0471, 0493 and 0496 above. After reading your post right above (#2320670), especially the part about others having a hard time hearing you due to poor quality audio, along with the other posts indicating what you’ve tried, I now believe that your Acer does indeed have a hardware problem, but with the audio processor portion of the chipset on the laptop’s motherboard. Definitely not something that’s easily repaired without a factory service center. 🙁 ☹

Hmm…I posted the Acer stuff above.  Ours works on Zoom, Google Meet (whatever it’s called), external monitors; actually better than expected.  One of our kids use it for everything, including, these days, distance learning.  Not sure where to go, about all that’s left is to resinstall, upgrade or refresh Windows.  May be the car wash effect but a clean install or upgrade to 20H2 brings better speed and graphics quality.

As suggested in other posts, you may have a partially functioning HDMI port, software won’t fix that.

A year ago I rebuilt our Acer; it’s from 2015 and had been idle for four years, supplanted by a phone and school issued Chromebook.  When squinting at a phone and all the ads in Chromebooks became old, out came the Acer.  I tried updating the OS which turned into a never ending reboot loop of updates from 2015 to now.  Add Acer’s updates spawned by the OEM partition on the hard drive and an unusable mess resulted.  I wiped the HD, downloaded and upgraded Windows with a USB drive.

You could try a Windows reset, pick the option that allows you to keep all your programs and files.  System>Update/Security>Recovery>Reset.  Issues others have had notwithstanding, IMO it’s much more reliable to use Windows Media Creation Tool and create a USB upgrade drive for another computer (option 2) and run that.  You can still keep all your stuff, if desired.  In fact, I’m about to do that on the Acer and Kid #2’s Dell laptop to go to 20H2 (2009.)  Do the upgrade offline; Windows Update is a fickle beast.

Acer’s support for anything but their gaming laptops (gamers have zero patience, maybe?) isn’t very complete but they’re not much different than other brands.  Ours is old enough that the OEM “bloatware” doesn’t function well in the present.  In fact, you can’t even download it but the OEM partition will still try to reinstall it!   I repartitioned the HD, downloaded the touchpad driver and nothing else when upgrading.
