Header in Xl has changed

A few years ago I noticed that the formulas in my spreadsheet (used week in / week out) had all changed and instead of providing for a cell reference like A2309/6125*9500 it was now =RC[1]/6125*9500. The header bar now showed a sequence of numbers instead of letters. At the time someone told me what I had done and how to change it back but I cannot remember nor find my previous query from a few years ago.
I am sure it was a simple adjustment but I can’t work out the necessary setting.
