I’m making a template for company memos. I have been instructed to include aheader on the 2nd page for any memos that contain 2 pages. The header is to include the text in the subject line and the word Page and the page number. I do not know how to do this when the template only has 1 page and they only want the header to show up on memos that end up being 2 pages. Since I am code illiterate, I may have a mystical view of code, but I’m wondering if there is some code we can put in the document that says, if the document contains two pages, insert this header and include whatever is typed after the words SUBJECT. Am I fantasizing? Or is this really possible?

AskWoody LoungerOctober 19, 2006 at 2:53 pm #1034314Fortunately, you don’t need any code for this.
1) Make the subject (and other standard info) a form field from the Forms toolbar. Double click the form field for the subject, and note the name of the associated bookmark.
Also, tick the check box ‘Calculate on Exit’.
Then click OK.2) Place the insertion point after the area with the form fields.
Select Insert | Break…
Click Continuous under Section Break.
Click OK.3) Select File | Page Setup…
Activate the Layout tab.
Tick the check box ‘Different first page’.
Click OK.
The second and subsequent pages of the memo (if present) can now have a different header and footer from the first page.4) Press Ctrl+End to go to the end of the memo.
Press Ctrl+Enter to insert a page break (don’t worry, you’re going to remove it again).5) Select View | Header and Footer.
Select Insert | Field…
Select the REF field in the list of fields.
Select the name of the bookmark for the subject in the list of bookmarks that appears.
Click OK.
Add the rest of the header (use the Header and Footer toolbar for the page number)
Click Close on the Header and Footer toolbar.6) Delete the page break you inserted.
Even though the second page disappears, Word will remember the settings for the 2nd page header.7) Select Tools | Protect Document…
In the task pane, specify that you want to protect the document for forms.
Click Sections…
Clear the check box for section 2.
Click OK.Save the memo.
You can now enter a subject. The subject won’t appear immediately in the header of the second page, but it will when you print or print preview the document.

AskWoody LoungerOctober 19, 2006 at 5:17 pm #1034336I still use the old low-tech approach we used in Word 2.0c for Windows, which is to leverage the STYLEREF field. The Memo header is a table, and the To, From, Date and Subject have their own rows, label cell on the left, content cell on the right. By assigning a unique style to the content cell (e.g., MemoSubject), you then can insert a STYLEREF field in your second page header referring to that style name and the subject will be copied into your header. If someone removes the style from the subject cell, though, you will get an error message instead.
