Headers & Footers (Office 2003 Word)

I would appreciate indications on how to have View>Headers & Footers in the new document at startup.
If my recollection is OK, it was standard display in Office 97.
I know a possibility is tro create my toolbar and click it when I open the application, but I would like something more automatic.

When Word starts, are you seeing your document in Print Layout view (what Word 97 used to call Page Layout view)? If so, any text in headers and footers ought to be visible. Or is that not what you mean?

Word opens a document in the same view that it was last saved in – so if your new empty documents are not opening in Page Layout view (which would allow you to see the headers and footers) then you need to:
1. Open the template that you are unhappy with
2. Change the view to Page Layout
3. Make a small text edit and then undo it (you need to do something that makes Word think the file has changed so it will save)
4. Save and close the template

Thanks to all of you for your replies.
I have OL 2003 (with OS : W200PE) and , yes, I open Word 2003 in Print Layout.
From your answers, what I did was to search for normal.dot template in my user Application Data folder, then I changed the view to Headers and Footers, tried to save is overwriting the previous normal.dot; but it didn’t let me.
So, I named it normal_2.dot , expecting to delete the original and rename the newly created (after closing Word)
I could not.
It doesn’t even let me rename it.
It claims a sharing violation “the file must be in use”.
I think I am almost close to get what I want.
If I cannot change the name in the MIcrosoft template, could someone please give me indications on how to make MY normal_2.dot the startup documents template?

If Normal.dot is still in use after you quit Word, it may be because you use Word as Outlook mail editor. Try deleting the old Normal.dot and renaming the new one after restarting your PC.

Thanks for your reply.
Yes, I was using W2003 as the OL2003 editor.
I disabled it and restarted the machine.
I bet you won’t believe this:
I went back to my user folder, deleted the OLD nornal.dot , then renamed nornal_2.dot and doble clicked on normal.dot , to open it..
and………….
what it came was the OLD normal.dot.
Not only it overwrote my changes, but also restored the default toolbars arrangement; that is, eliminated my customized toolbars setup.
So, I went back to Window explorer and started keying ctrl Z several times, to see everything being undone, until it was again one normal.dot and the other normal_2.dot.
Opened again Wrd2003, and guess what:
Opening both, I have the SAME OLD page, although it has restored my customized toolbars setup.
So, this brings me back to the previous question (forget remaning normal.dot).
I want to have this application opening in MY template.
How can I do that? (I will re-customize the toolbars again; no probvlem).

Word uses Normal.dot as the template for blank documents, and it always loads Normal.dot, unless you start Word with the Shift key held down. Although you can create documents from other templates of course, there is no way to specify another template as being the default template.

Now that you don’t use Word as mail editor, you should be able to open Normal.dot, edit it and save it (instead of saving it under another name).

Hi Daniel,

Since you want Word to open with your tmplate as the default, simply quit Word etc, then replace the existing Normal.dot with your preferred version (i.e. copy your Normal_2.dot over Normal.dot). Next time you start Word, it will do so using your template with your customized toolbars.
