Hi , l need some expert advice l am not a tech wiz but could follow simple instructions. l bought a very expensive computer it is an MSI high end laptop unfortunately with an intel processor. l bought it end of December 2017 then the news about the Spectre and Meltdown hit the news, so l have not set it up yet still in box waiting to find out what to do with the updates, as l have been following website since January when l was searching the internet for what to do. l would like to set my laptop up, it has Windows 10 pro installed on it . l would like to know how to stop the updates, where you go into the laptop to do this as l have never used windows 10 always preferred windows 7. Once l turn the laptop on how do l stop the Windows Updates and then which updates should l install up until what date as all the old updates will be waiting to be installed from the computer being new. Also should l install any other updates from others like Java and so on are they safe to update or hold off on all updates. Its very confusing for me and l have put off setting up my new laptop because of all the confusion. Your advice would greatly be appreciated thanks so much annettesha .

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

ManagerApril 4, 2018 at 9:52 am #181235There is no way I can tell you everything you need to know/do. There is a Win10 Forum on this site. I suggest you look through it and educate your self. You will need to look under your version (1703 or 1709). There are also Knowledge Base articles and Woody’s articles on ComputerWorld that may help. I can make a few general suggestions.
Make the first bootup OFFLINE (not connected to the Internet). When it asks, say you will set it up later.
Create a LOCAL ID – it will try to trick you into believing you have to have a Microsoft ID, but you DO NOT.
Consider the privacy questions you are asked during setup CAREFULLY. Microsoft tries to collect a lot of your private data if you do not opt-out.
Before you go online, go through the Start Menu settings and the Settings App, item by item. Some points to consider:
+ If you use Cortana/Bing/Edge, Microsoft collects your data and stores it online.
+ All the “tile” apps are set to run in the background and have access to your private data. If you don’t use them and you don’t want the snooping, turn them off. They also use your resources running in the background all the time.
+ For Microsoft data collection – the choices are “Basic” and “Never” to help minimize snooping.
+ For Windows Update – Under Advanced, set CBB (v1703) or SAC (v1709), delay feature updates 365 days. There is also delay for quality updates. You will need to download wushowhide.diagcab from MS to be able to hide updates.
+ You can use ClassicShell or one of the other Menu substitutes if you like the Win7 look.
+ Any time the choice is “suggestions” or “tips” you are asking for MS ads and garbage-ware.When you get the OFFLINE part done, come back and ask specific questions about the setup before you go online.
