Hibernate, Windows 7,not working, SOLUTION possible

see my prior thread, “hibernate …. (a pain)”

had two machines, stopped hibernating, windows 7 machines.
extensive suggestions in prior thread, from this forum, for mechanisms to try to fix it. Unfortuantely, no solutions.
BUT, this week i retried hibernate, and it WORKED !!!
I had not done anyting different.

BUT, on retrospect, I HAD done something different.
I had first shut hibernate off
powercfg -h off
I hten restarted, then did a DEFRAGMENTATION.
even though windows does defrag’ing, this process when started manually took about 1 hour, had about 6 or 7 passes.
I then shut it down.
later restarted, worked with system, etc.
LATER in week, I retried hibernation on a whim, and it WORKED !! That was when I then posted to other thread that it had resolved on its own, not remembering that I had done the above steps.

SO, today, I decided to try this on my 2nd machine. (notebook HP machine). I first did a drive CLEANING (temp files, etc)
then did powercfg -h off
then restarted
then did defragmentation.
then did
powercfg -h onn
then restarted

then tried hibernate.

it WORKED !!!

now, I don’t know if my machines were a fluke, or if this actually can help to solve other’s issues, but I’d like to knowk, by replies to this thread, if it helps others with hibernate issues, since microsoft can’t give us any easy way to determine why hibernate suddenly stops working.

and, that is why I posted, and I’d like people to respond to this thread if this does help them; i’m just curious if this is a significant solution for others who hve had this issue (as there are many instances posted on the web), or if this is just a small part of a more varied problem.

Hibernate requires an amount of free disk space atleast the size of your memory. In my case I had to reboot after clearing my Windows disk. In your case the disk defragment may have freed up just enough disk space to enable hibernation.

OK, machine in this thread, has been doing GREAT for several months.
No change to hiberfil.sys, etc.

THEN, I installed FAmily Tree Maker 2012, and accompanying that were some chages from windows to Windows Net 4, etc.

Lo and Behold, it AGAIN BROKE my HIBERNATE !!!

HIBERNATE now not working. Did some other windows updates (since install or re-install of Net begat even MORE updates).
This is NUTSSS !!

Any other suggestions as to how to try and track down exactly what is STOPPING hibernate from working?
(uninstalling FAm-tree-maker and Microsoft Net is not an option, I will just have to live with a broken hibernate in the interim).

I would just like to find something that tracks the flow of

1. Select hibernate
2. windows starts to pack things into file
3. SOMETHING BLOCKS action #2
4. Windows terminates action, goes back to password screen

Between step 2 and 3, it is a giant black box !!! BUT, SOMETHING, or SOME PROCESS, has to be the MONITOR of that box, and there HAS to be a trigger that says “ok, we cannot hibernate”. I’ve tried the other tracing stuff, but it is too complicated to figure out (suggestions appreciated, but I plead ignorance in tracing those actions).

anyway, thought I’d re-post, see if any other ideas

How much free space is left on your HDD? maybe installing family tree maker has taken up HDD space and not left enough for hibernate. If that is the case you need a larger HDD.

Have you gone back through the steps you listed in post #1 again?

I use hibernation on my laptops always; I never turn them off. On a new laptop I first disable hibernation through the Control Panel > Power Options. Then I open Windows Explorer and delete the hiberfil.sys file. Next I defrag the drive and after that completes I go back to Control Panel > Power Options and enable hibernation again.

I set hibernation to trigger when I close the lid on my laptop. I don’t skip any Windows updates, and I’ve never had a problem with hibernation. I use Dell, my daughter has used HP and now has a Lenovo, and my son has a Lenovo. No hibernation problems with any of them.

Hiberfil.sys is not a moveable file; defrag won’t touch it, and Windows won’t let any installation routine touch it, either.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!

We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do with our systems; we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things.

We were all once "Average Users".
