I have run into 3 problems: 1. I uninstalled the Field Sniffer, yet “(a) FieldSinffer” is still listed at tjhe bottom of my Word/Tools menu. 2. I tried to install Hidden File Detector, but when I came to the request for an AddIn Password, I had no idea what to put in the box. I tried a couple possibilities including leaving it blank, but nothing was accepted. Eventually, after ignoring that screen, I got to a screen saying I had successfully installed HFD. 3 HFD is nowhere to be found on my Tools menu. Would appreciate some help with this.

AskWoody LoungerOctober 6, 2002 at 1:01 am #622154To get rid of the Field Sniffer command on the Tools menu, proceed as
follows:1. Choose Tools|Customize.
2. Click on the Toolbars tab.
3. Scroll down and select Menu Bar.
4. Click Reset and then click Close. To finish installing Hidden File Detector, search your hard drive for a file called HiddenFileDetector_Addin.dot and double-click it in Windows Explorer to open it in Word, then follow the instructions listed there.

AskWoody LoungerOctober 6, 2002 at 9:11 pm #622256Another problem: I could follow the instructions perfectly on my computer, but when I tried to move the Addin to the Word Startup folder on my husband’s (Win XP, Word 2002), a strange (to me) thing happened. The full path (including Application Data/Microsoft/Word/Startup) showed up when I went to Word/Tools/Options/File Locations/Startup/Modify, but when I tried to move it, the Application Data level of the path and everything below was missing from the tree. What do I need to do?

AskWoody LoungerOctober 13, 2002 at 4:06 pm #623929Bill,
I originally successfully installed the HID on OXP-SP2 with Norton Antivirus 2002 running. However, I wanted to try to keep the task pane open when I opened Word so I followed instructions from Phil to move the HID.dot file to the Templates folder. However, I could not load it and it caused an error saying it was not installed, crashed the program when I tried to have it installed. Deleted it from Templates and moved it back to the Startup folder found under File Locations under Options. Will not run there now either. Keeps giving a “VBA error running the macro” and crashes the program. The long and short is HID will not run under any circumstances now. Any assistance would be most appreciated.-

AskWoody LoungerOctober 13, 2002 at 6:35 pm #623944First, thank you for your assistance.
The exact scenario is as follows: 1-restart Windows XP Home with SP1; 2-search for and remove all ~*.*, *.tmp files; 3-copy DHF.dot into the Word startup directory identified in the “options/file location” box; 4-restart WORD 2002 with SP1 and SP2 installed; 5-The task pane momentarily opens and then closes leaving a new document full screen; 6-click Tools/Detect Hidden Files; 7-Microsoft Visual Basic information window opens with message “errors occurred during load”; 8-click OK in this message window; 9-Microsoft Word information window opens with message “The macro cannot be found or has been disabled because of your macro security settings”; 10-doesn’t matter what macro security setting is active same problem occurs. -

AskWoody LoungerOctober 13, 2002 at 7:19 pm #623947Do you have any other addins installed? If so, quit Word and remove them, then restart Word with no addins, not even HFD. Then choose Tools|TemplatesAndAddins and click Add and then navigate to HFD.dot and select it and click OK. If you still get error messages, try downloading a fresh copy of the addin.

AskWoody LoungerOctober 6, 2002 at 1:06 am #622155Before anyone replied, I happened upon the “Oops!” message with instructions on how to put HiddenFileDetector_Addin.dot into Word’s Startup folder. I did that and “Detect Hidden Files” is now on my Tools menu–ALONG with {a} FieldSinffer! (which is inoperational). How do I get rid of the item on my Tools menu? The HFD seems to work OK.
