hiding collapsible sections from printing

Hi,

I’m new here and hoping that I’ve put this question in the right place. I’m creating a document with multiple headings and subheadings within it. These headings separate the document by scenario, and include specific wording for those scenarios. Right now, those headings print unless they’re deleted – and the team using the document isn’t consistently doing that.

I’m trying to figure out if Word can either:

1. not print the headings (I’ve tried making them “hidden” but then the collapsible feature goes away)
2. exclude a specific style from printing

This is driving me bonkers, so any help you can extend is appreciated.

I’d suggest you take a look at Master Documents. Just google “Microsoft Word” “Master Document”.

Word’s master document ‘feature’ is a known source of document corruption. See:

Note the comment near the end of the first link:

A master document has only two possible states: Corrupt, or just about to be corrupt.

A better approach would be to create a set of custom quick parts (aka building blocks) in the document’s template and insert those as & where required. Even if one is accidentally deleted, it’s a simple matter to re-insert from the quick parts gallery. See:

Hi,

Thanks for this suggestion, and for the warning away from the Master Document approach. I’ll take a look at both solutions to better understand my options as well.

I’m effectively trying to create a letter template where the end user can expand the content they need and remove the content they don’t. The template needs to be dynamic, but I can’t ask the end user to add quick parts. I need to have those in there for the team to use.

I don’t know if this even makes sense…I am going to attach a sample of what I’m working on, to make sure I’m asking the right questions.
