• How can I change the configuration of the Win10 Flyout?

    I am Win10/Pro, version 21H1.

How can I get the Flyout on my Dell 7569 to look like the Flyout on my Dell 5482? Maybe, the difference is due to the build. If so, how do I update a Flyout build?
If it isn’t due the differences in builds, how do I change the way the 7569 Flyout looks?

And how do I get the light mode in the Flyouts instead of the dark mode?

Light mode and dark mode are in Settings>Personalization>Colors.  One for Windows, one for Apps.

I use Open Shell, so I’m not sure if what you’re showing is the Start Menu.  If so, the standard one has a number of right click settings here and there you could try.  Builds do effect some weird changes but different devices with the same build should appear the same.  We have many Dells, laptops and desktops and they’re consistent.

Maybe someone else has some ideas. 🙂

I am showing the Start Menu (internal to Windows 10), not Open Shell.

The Flyout build on the 7569 has changed to 2021.11.16.25754363 and the 5482 has changed to the same build. But on the 7569, no right panel automatically shows up. The options do not show up unless one right-clicks and then the options are presented in a drop-down menu. On the other hand, on the 5482, a right panel automatically shows up and the options are there right off the bat. So, with the new build on both machines, the screenshot for the 7569 looks the same as before and the screenshot for the 5482 looks the same as before, as well.

Clearly, though both machines have the same Flyout build, the Flyout is behaving differently on one versus the other.

As for dark mode in the Flyouts, I have Settings>Personalization>Color set for default Windows mode to ‘Dark’ and for default app mode to ‘Light’. Transparency effects are off. The accent color is a Custom Color and I have the box checked for ‘Start, taskbar, and action center’ and for ‘Title bars and window borders’. So, this custom color shows up in those places. But, still on both machines, the Flyout is black (but the Start window is the custom color).

Notice also that even though the build numbers are the same, the 7569 Flyout does NOT have a Feedback icon at the top. You find ‘Feedback’ by clicking on the three dots in the upper-right hand corner. On the other hand, the Flyout on the 5482 DOES have an icon for ‘Feedback’ at the top.

Where are you coming up with these build numbers?

In the Flyout, click on the three dots in the upper right-hand corner. For the 7569, it looks like this:
        Build-number

The menu under the three dots has a different look on the 5482 (another difference between the two machines, even though the Build is the same). For the 5482, it looks like this.
        Build-number-5482

Yes, now I see. IIRC, the page you reference is server-generated. I don’t think there is a setting to configure nor can you force it to a particular setting.

      Hi WCHS:

Just an FYI that I currently have build 2021.11.18.25797199 and when I search for “defrag” from the Start menu on my Dell Inspiron 5584 / Win 10 Pro v21H1 laptop everything appears “normal”, except that Windows Search no longer uses a white background. I’m not sure why Windows Search appears differently on your Dell 7569, but you might want to read some of the comments below Mayank Parmar’s 05-Nov-2021 Microsoft is Rolling Out Dark Mode for Windows 10 Search on the Windows Latest site. It appears the recent rollout of dark mode for Win 10 Search hasn’t gone smoothly for everyone.

      Win-10-Pro-v21H1-Search-Dark-Mode-Build-2021_11_18_25797199-19-Nov-2021-

I checked at Settings | Personalization | Colors and Choose Your Color is Custom, my default Windows mode is Dark, my default app mode is Light and Transparency effects are On. I don’t recall ever customizing those color settings myself – I thought Choose Your Color used to be Light by default before 05-Nov-2021, but I might be wrong about that.

Are the options at Settings | Personalization | Start identical for both your machines?

        Hi Imacri,
I have the same Settings | Personalization | Colors settings as yours: Choose your Colors is Custom; Choose your default Windows mode is Dark; Choose your default apps mode is Light. The only difference between yours and mine is that I have Transparency effects Off.

The only difference between my two machines with regard to these settings is that the color of Choose your accent color is not the same — the 7569 accent color is a royal blue but the 5482 accent color is a teal green. This accent color shows up on both machines under Show accent color on the following surfaces for the Start menu, the taskbar, and action center because THAT box is checked and for the Title bars and window borders because THAT box is checked, too. Except for accent color, the settings on the two machines are identical.

I read the Parmar article that you cited and now I see why the Flyout is in Dark Mode. Evidently, there is no choice for the Flyout to be in the “accent color”. For the present, it always dark or light. It is dark in one of two ways: a) if Choose your color is Dark or b) if Choose your color is Custom AND Choose your default Windows mode is Dark. It is light in one of two ways: a) if Choose your color is Light or b) if Choose your color is Custom AND Choose your default Windows mode is Light. If Choose your color is Custom, there is no way to get the Flyout in an accent color. You can get the Start Menu, Taskbar, Action Center, Title bars, and Window borders to appear in the accent color, but not the Flyout.

This answers my question about why my Flyout is Dark, i.e., because I have Choose your color Custom AND I have default Windows mode Dark.

I’m still trying to figure out why the configuration of the Flyout is different on the two machines, even though the build is the same version. The 7569 Flyout has one type of header at the top, has one kind of drop-down menu under the three dots, and has no right-panel after I do a search for an app in the Taskbar search box. The 5482 Flyout has another type of header at the top, has another kind of drop-down menu under the three dots, and has a right-panel after I do a search in the Taskbar search box.

I log on to the 7569 with my Microsoft account password. I log on to the 5482 with a local account password. The Flyout on my 5482 looks like the Flyout on your 5584. How do you log on to your 5584? If you log on with a local account, maybe that’s the answer–the configuration differs depending whether one logs on with a local account or a Microsoft account.

      Hi WCHS:

I log in to Windows with a Microsoft Account (although I do have a backup Administrator account that’s a local account just in case my Microsoft Account is ever corrupted), so I don’t think that’s the cause.

Just a guess on my part, but perhaps there’s a difference in the way that context menus are displayed on both machines. Instead of searching for “defrag” from Windows Search, what happens when you go to Start | Windows Administrative Tools and then right click on Defragment and Optimize Drives? Does the context menu open on both machines, and if you click on More as shown in the attached image can you see the full context menu (i.e., Pin to Taskbar / Run as Administrator / Open File Location) on both machines?

I believe your Inspiron 5482 and 7569 are both 2-in-1‘s. Do both of these machines have a touch screen, and is it possible one of those machines is being used in Tablet Mode? Press the Windows key + A (or click the Action Center icon in the system tray next to your system clock) to open the Action Center and see if Tablet Mode is activated. If activated, Tablet mode can effect how context menus are displayed.

Assuming the screen size of both your Dell 2-in1’s are similar, if you go to Settings | System | Display | Scale and Layout do both machines have the same settings?  I use the  recommended settings on my 15″ Inspiron 5584 for DPI scaling (125 %) and display resolution (1920 x 1018).

      Hi Imacri,
      Thanks for your helpful screenshots.

…perhaps there’s a difference in the way that context menus are displayed on both machines.

Nope, Context Menus look the same as yours, on both of my machines.

You’re right – both machines are 2-in-1 devices, with a touch screen; I have Tablet Mode off on both.

The Screen size is different on the two laptops: the 7569, which has the strange Flyout, is in the 15 series (15.6” on the diagonal) and the 5482, whose Flyout is like yours, is in the 14 series (14.0” on the diagonal).

Scale and layout (125%) as well as display resolution (1920 x 1080) are the same on both.

Do you think screen size accounts for the difference in the configuration of the Flyouts???

I wonder what other 15-inchers would say — do they have the 7569 (strange) Flyout, too? {The builds numbers are changing, of course, but there’s still the same difference in Flyouts on the 7569 (15.6″ screen) vs the 5482 (14.0″ screen)]
