I have a HP server on my home network that runs Ubuntu. I rarely access the server using Ubuntu except for the odd times I check that everything is working ok. All my access is done via my PC using Windows 7 (the server is just another network drive). Other users on the network have access via Windows and there is access from the entertainment system via Android.

The server is mainly used for storing movies and TV series. I want to stop everyone else from updating the server but still have read access. I also want to hide some folders on the server or maybe password protect them.

    Is this possible?

I put the questions here instead of the Server Forum because I thought this is more a Windows question than a server question because the server is just another network drive.

It’s a server question, specifically a Linux one.
To protect files / directories on a share you need to set the permissions on the server. I don’t know how to do that on your server as it’s Linux.

Thanks Paul, I’ll ask in the server forum.

Doesn’t matter where you ask, just pointing out it’s a server issue.

How did you create the shares originally?

      cheers, Paul

Good question. The server has been running for probably 3+ years and I don’t remember how I created the shares. I don’t remember doing it in Linux. In Windows there is no Sharing option under Properties for the server folders so I can’t have done it there.

In Windows, if I click on Properties for the top folder on the server, it shows the ‘Type of file’ as Share, so I suppose this was set in Linux. All other folders under that one show Type as ‘File folder’

This thread has a nice guide to file sharing under Ubuntu.
