how can Win7 Backup&Restore hide an external drive?

…Be sure that your backup system (such as Win7’s Backup and Restore) hides your external, USB backup drive — i.e., it doesn’t show up in Windows Explorer and so ransomware should not be able to access it…

She does not tell how to do this in Win7?

You could remove the drive letter in Disk Manager, but you then would have to allocate a new one when you want to make a back up. The easiest way is to only plug in the device when you need to use it. If its not connected, it cant be compromised.
W7 backup and restore is notoriously unreliable. A better choice are the free Macrium or EaseUS backup programs.

Just to add, IF you have an external USB setup like I have ( which I leave plugged in and turned off until ready to use it for backup ), there would be no access to it. It all depends on your setup and equipment.

In the desktop, where I added a twin HD, right after I made a clone of OS and data partitions onto the 2nd HD, I use diskmgr to un-assign drive letter, CTL-PNL devices to disable [but not remove] 2nd HD. Neither 2nd HD or any 2nd HD contents show up on Explorer until I reverse the above two steps.
