    hi,

    i read the article https://www.computerworld.com/article/3232632/how-to-block-the-windows-10-may-2019-update-version-1903-from-installing.html

these tips work but the problem is that when the installed build reaches end of life then it will warn you non stop that the build is reaching end of life and then it will download the next build on its own and it will force you to restart so the next build is installed. for example the end of life of build 1803 is nov 2019 and some users are getting forced to restart and update

i am using build 1809 and i think the end of life for it is may 2020. i am happy with my build and the way that i setup my laptop and i dont want to upgrade 1903. i am reading a LOT of posts about people having issues with 1903 and using 1903 is like the lottery: either u are lucky and all is perfect or u are unlucky and you will have issues. i dont want to take that chance and i want to stay on 1809 when it reaches end of life and i dont care if i stop getting windows updates

my question is how do i block the update to 1903 when it wants to force me to update? i think that doing things like changing update policy, installing update blocker like shutup10 or setting wifi connection to metered cant stop the forced update

can Wushowhide really stop the forced update? i also heard that the HOSTS file can be edited to block the forced update but i dont know how to edit it

You won’t be forced to upgrade to 1903 as by the time, May 2020, when 1809 will EOL, you will be able to skip 1903, 1909/1903 SP1 and maybe 2003.

If you are a Pro user you have still deferral options like 365 days for Feature Updates…
If you are a Home user you have Microsoft’s wushowhide and metered option.

what do you mean by “You won’t be forced to upgrade to 1903 as by the time, May 2020, when 1809 will EOL, you will be able to skip 1903, 1909/1903 SP1 and maybe 2003.”?

now 1803 is reaching end of life and all the people who have 1803 are being forcefully upgraded to 1903 and it is downloading the update and its forcing you to restart to install the update. end of life of 1809 is may 2020 so around the beginning of next year it will start to nag me to upgrade to 1903

Not if you upgrade 1803 to 1809 with EOL at 5.2020.
If you the Pro version you can defer up to a year. If have a home version you can use wushowhide or any of 3rd party apps to block 1903, 1909, 2003…

https://www.easeus.com/todo-backup-resource/how-to-stop-windows-10-from-automatically-update.html says that i can disable the windows update service in services.msc and gpedit.msc. if i do these things then will that stop windows update from forcefully downloading build 1903? or will windows cheat and it will reenable the windows update service on its own so it can download the 1903?

i just found out that disabling the windows update service wont work because update Orchestrator Service and that will switch the windows update back on 🙁

i have kasperky internet security 2019 on my laptop. my firewall should be able to block the windows updates. i can create packet rules (plz see packet rules here https://support.kaspersky.com/14314). i need u to plz tell me how to block all the windows update addresses and what exactly i put in each packet rule

I have 1803 and the connection is set to metered. I have a notification of the upgrade but it says it can’t complete the download and charges may apply. Fingers crossed it holds.

      cheers, Paul

This may help — I had used a regedit to block Windows updates but that was cumbersome. So now i use Winaero Tweaker from winaero.com to block Windows updates. (also the  Ultimate Windows Tweaker 4 for Windows 10 from  thewindowsclub.com is another good app.) Both are highly rated.

Both tweakers have over a hundred settings to easily make changes to Windows without digging thru control panel settings and whatnot. When you do want to update Windows, remember to uncheck ‘disable Window updates’.

I download the MS updates i want to install via Susan’s Patchlist. Then disconnect from the internet and uncheck ‘Disable Windows updates and notifications’ in the tweaker. Then install the updates manually (or click the ‘Check For Updates Now’ button in ‘Update and Security’  if we’re in Defcon 2.)

Neither of my updated v1903 computers use Intel Optane/RST or RAID which has caused problems for many. I also unplug external backup harddrives because that also caused probs for many.

To block Windows updates only, wushowhide or Winupdate MiniTool are good as others have said.

Three of the update blockers I’ve used (WinAero Tweeker, Ultimate Windows Tweaker and WUShowHide) do stop Windows updates. With both WAT and UWT the Windows Update window is blank (not working) if you call it up through Settings. I haven’t tried the two you mentioned above.

I have not run a Win10 version past its end-of-life yet, I update to the next version before that happens. So i don’t know if Microsoft can force an update when Windows update is disabled by those utilities, but i suppose MS could do it.

It is Not Recommended to manually stop the Windows background service Orchestrator forever. (for one it requires admin cmd lines and Reg hack that might be forgotten.) There are many complaints by people about Orchestrator taking lots of computer resources and RAM, but that hasn’t hit my computers. Knock on wood.

An easy way to stop Orchestrator is to disable Remote Procedure Call. But i have settled on WinAero Tweaker instead, and it has many other tweaks to customize Windows, just like WUT does.

I sent a couple of links about Orchestrator in a PM reply, though you’ve probably read more about it than i have.

“…but Windows cheats…”  lol, yeah they do.

PS edit: Re-reading my earlier post, i meant to type i may do a full “Check for Updates” when we’re in Defcon 4 (not 2.)
