    I run Firefox (currently v. 22.0) under Windows 7.

In the Compose window, I start to type a recipient’s name in the “To:” field, and the stored address pops up. Unfortunately, for one frequent addressee, the address is obsolete.

How do I delete the bad address, or edit it to the correct one?

    Thanks.

Firefox is a Browser, not an email client. It does not have a compose window.

Assuming that you meant “Thunderbird” from Mozilla:

Go to the address book and locate the email address that is obsolete and highlight it.

Now Right click that address and select “Delete”.

      Done.

The autocomplete addresses are the ones in the contact list?

In Outlook, the autocomplete addresses are kept in a separate list.

Which web mail service do you use? You can delete suggestions in Yahoo by hovering over the relevant one and clicking the x at the end but this is supplied by the contact list. Other web mail providers may well have different behaviours.

I’m talking about FF here not Thunderbird or Outlook.

Brain fart. I use Gmail. My query should have been about how to delete obsolete Gmail addresses.

While in Gmail just above the red compose box click on the Gmail drop down and select contacts. In the contact list put check marks next to the one you wish to delete and then select More and “Delete Contacts”.
