On my Win10 PC there is a news button nestled to the right of my search box. Click on it and a window pops up with information I don’t care to see. The common instructions on how to stop this interact is to right-click on the taskbar, choose News and interests and select Turn off.

Well, I’ve done that and this button/window still appear. I turned it on and off again to see if that might work – and it still appears.

Help – how do I get rid of this “feature” of Win10 that I don’t care to have enabled.

      Try this:
Turn it back on. Then uncheck “Open on hover.” Then turn it back off.

If you have Win10 Pro, you can block it using Group Policy.
In the Searchbar type gpedit and press Enter.
Navigate to: Local Computer Policy > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > News and Interests
In the right hand pane, double click on “Enable news and interests on the Taskbar
Set the value to “Disabled,” click on “Apply” then “OK

      iholden,

What you are seeing are Search highlights. If you right-click the taskbar and select Search, I believe you will see the following:

You need to de-select Show on hover and Show search highlights. Personally, I also de-select Show search box and select Show search icon instead.

      HTH. Regards,

      Phil

You nailed the problem and provided the solution that worked for me. Thanks for clarifying it was Search Results not News. My frustration level has decreased back to minimal frustration related to Windows over other OS interfaces. 🙂

Thanks so much!!! It was driving me crazy, because I’d turn it off, and then next thing I know, it’s back!  You’re the bomb!!

The following link provides several different ways to remove the Weather and News button; including a registry entry for those who don’t have Group Policy.

All the above advices didn’t work for me. What worked was the registry. Now MS News are poof gone for good from my taskbar.

Another way is to prevent Web Searches from the Search bar (aka: will search items only on the PC…apps and files).
The attached PDF explains how to add a registry value that limits the search to items on the PC.

you CAN’T block their SPAM BOTS.

      I don’t get any spam, news, ads… with Windows 10 Pro 22H2.
My start menu is empty too.
