How do I rebuild my Recycle Bin?

Hi to all,
How do you create or activate a new Recycle Bin in Windows 8.1? When I click on the current Recycle Bin icon on my desktop, I get a message: ‘This folder is empty.’ If I go into: Recycle Bin Properties it shows 931 GB Space available and I DO NOT have ‘Don’t move files to the Recycle Bin’ ticked.
I have tried tests by deleting several files but nothing shows up in the Recycle Bin, at least one that I can locate or recover.
I would appreciate any help. Respectfully, Graphics Guy [/SIZE]

You could try the Refresh option to repair Win 8.1

Hi,
Thank you for the speedy response but if I understand the Refresh option it will remove all of my installed programs like Photoshop and Office 10 that will need to be re-installed. I was hoping for a simpler solution. Respectfully, GG

You don’t say whether Recycle Bin ever worked correctly. If it did, you might try System Restore. I would also be inclined to try SFC /scannow but be sure to run that in a Command Window as Administrator.

I’d also considered those but the restore point could be indeterminate if not known when the fault first occurred, but if Graphics Guy wants to try them should my previous suggestion not do it, the following two tutorials will help, if needed.

Something that would be interesting to me, when you delete a file, it does not go into the Recycle Bin, but can you drag and drop a file onto the Recycle Bin icon?

If you can, it is the configuration that tells the computer what to do with deleted files. If you can’t, it means that the Recycle Bin itself is hosed.

You don’t have security software that replaces the recycle bin by any chance? Norton used to have its own recycle bin replacement as an example.

I’m confused by the original post. “931 GB available” doesn’t tell how much is being consumed by the Recycle Bin.

Hi to all and thank you for the various suggestions but nothing seems to fix my problem. Sorry it took so long to answer the various suggestions but I wanted to try out all of them first. I am answering all of the suggestions in this e-mail instead of separately.

**Yes, the Recycle Bin has worked up to recently. I ran the program at the Administrator Command prompt and received the following message: Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. I guess I have bigger problems than I was aware of.

**As per your suggestion I dragged and dropped a file onto the Recycle Bin Icon, then right clicked on the icon and chose ‘Open’ and received the notification that the Recycle Bin was empty.

**I was just reporting what I found in Recycle Bin Properties, I don’t know the significance other than that is the amount of memory set aside for the Recycle Bin.
I didn’t see anything listing the amount consumed.

Some gurus suggest running SFC three times in a row. So, you might want to try running it again before doing a Refresh or Reset.

The CBS Log (as viewed with the instructions in the link) will show which files it was unable to repair.

931GB seems excessive for its capacity – mine is showing default as just 9145MB in Win 7.

** Nice to hear from you again. I ran SCANNOW three consecutive times and received the same result. While waiting for the third to finish up I couldn’t help thinking of Einstein’s famous quote about insanity. – “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” – Albert Einstein
I then tried the DISM Command suggested by SUDO15 and everything is back to normal so I am hoping it will stay that way and I don’t have to Refresh and re-install all my programs. Thanks for your response. Respectfully, GG

Manually reset the Recycle Bin icons
To do this, follow these steps:

1.Right-click the Desktop and select Personalize.
2.In the Tasks pane, click Change desktop icons.
3.Select the Recycle Bin (full) icon and then click Change Icon.
4.In the Change Icon dialog box, select the full Recycle Bin icon.
5.Click OK to close the Change Icon dialog box.
6.Select the Recycle Bin (empty) icon and then click Change Icon.
7.In the Change Icon dialog box, select the empty Recycle Bin icon.
8.Click OK to close the Change Icon dialog box.
9.Click Apply, and then click OK.

**I opened up this log and there were scores of entries but nothing means anything to me. I am just a 79 year old user and have no computer repair training.

**This appears to be the amount AVAILABLE not the amount set aside, and it is 931GB as reported.

***I missed the DISM Command on my first look but just ran it now and got the following readout: ‘The Restore Operation completed successfully. The Component Store correction was repaired. The Operation completed successfully’. I then ran SFC /scannow and got this readout: ‘Windows Resource protection did not find any integrity violation’. I opened up the Recycle Bin and it is now working like a charm.
