Interesting. I read most of the article & even compared the results to the Windows (Bing) Maps app on my Windows 8.1 machine. Windows Maps has green spaces & some buildings; the buildings become more obvious as you zoom in. However, not all buildings are shown; mainly clusters in some areas.

Bought a refurbished Windows 10 64-bit, currently updated to 22H2. Have broke the AC adapter cord going to the 8.1 machine, but before that, coaxed it into charging. Need to buy new adapter if wish to continue using it.

What struck me, if Google is doing this for their public maps what do the spy agencies have for maps as they should have access to higher quality images?

Apple maps the worst, but Google can be widely off the mark too. You want real accuracy you have to use a GPS device with better mapping software. Also I do not trust any of the online mapping services to direct me properly with directions or best route. They are very flawed in terms of selecting the best routes at times.

Interesting article.  I make heavy use of Google Maps, Google’s aerial and street views, current topo maps (available on Topoquest), and historical topo maps.  So heavy, in fact, that Google thought that I lived in a couple of the places that I was repeatedly searching and said so, “based on your Internet searches.”

I use Google Maps if I have to, because they are by far the best maps. But I always start with Mapquest.

I just can’t bring myself to give Google any more personal information than the absolute minimum necessary.

I prefer good old Ordnance Survey paper maps in the UK.

No telemetry, scripts or background info leaked and easy to navigate without any signal 😀

I use Google to look up addresses, but for navigation it is my Garmin and Waze.  Waze is especially good for avoiding traffic, traps and delays.

I used to use Google to route long trips and compare routings, but the maps insisted on doing weird things like adding small loops or detours off the main roads, and all attenpts to drag the route results in more loops.  I thought it might be my mouse, but it is the same with different mice, both wires and wireless.  As such, for long trips into unknown areas, I have also began using the mapping of the AAA website to print directions.  They are far, far more accurate.  Google also no longer allows you to download map locations to your GPS unless you have an account.

I regularly check my house with Google, but the image is from 2013.

I have also found that the Google overhead images and maps are not reliable in a business park setting as they often show a location by its loading dock rather than the front door (good for delivery folks though).  You need to verify it with Street View.
