• How long will a mouse last

I have a Microsoft touch mouse that I like very much. Recently I have to press the mouse buttons repeatedly or harder to get the mouse to engage.
My question is how long is a mouse supposed to generally last under regular daily use.

That depends on what your regular daily use entails. If you are a heavy gamer it’s a lot more stressful than if you’re writing a book or doing spreadsheets or programming. The contacts will wear and it all depends on how hard you are on it. If you really like that mouse I’d buy another one NOW so you have it when the current one fails, and it will as it is already showing signs of wear. I’m not a gamer but heavy user 8 Hrs + per day and I usually replace mice within 2 years.

Guess what…. now that I snitched on it…. it wants to behave better

I’d agree with RetiredGeek. At work we have to replace mice on an occasional basis, perhaps one out of the 22-odd every couple of months, which averages out about once every two-three years.

I have been using the same mouse (a Logitech Trackman Marble) for over 15 years. I do clean it 3-4 times per year, but it still works great and is my pointing device of choice and the most comfortable I have ever tried. So there’s no reason why a mouse won’t last just as long with good care.

      Computercare,

They built things much better 15 years ago! I still have an old Micron keyboard the thing weighs a ton (about the same as 5 or 6 of the latest Dell keyboards). Of course it’s got a PS2 connector so I just keep it around for working on older machines.

I also think the electronics on the newer laser mice do not last indefinitely. If you are like I am, my mouse gets dropped a few times a week.

My usage seems to create double clicks on the left switch after about 1 1/2 years. It has been consistent for about a decade now. In the past i used to open the cover and unsolder and remove the right click switch. I would save it for future use to replace a failed left click switch. I abandoned that habit some years ago. At $20 every 2 years, it just is not worth the effort.

Going on 6 years now with my Logitech G9 with moderately heavy usage. No gaming though, I think that would create far more ware on any mouse.

I find the newer Logitech are far inferior these days; i’ve been through 2 in the last year, with regular use and no gaming.
I will try another Brand for my next one.

I have not kept a record of mouse failures, so I can’t say how long a mouse would last if I bought one new, and only used that mouse, but from time to time they do fail, and I do replace them. Two years sound about right.

I usually get them from Microcenter, because they have a good selection and I can go there and pick them up and look at them before I buy one. I have Dell and HP mice, but when I buy one it is either the cheapest Inland (Microcenter house brand I think) or Microsoft optical wheel mouse. They fit my hand, work well, and when something happens to them they are cheap, so it isn’t a big deal, and I just throw them away and move on.

The nice thing about the Logitech’s is their 3 year warranty. I had a mouse for a year and a half, and Logitech sent a new one, no questions asked. Did not ask for the old one back.

Yes Ted, I have a logitech and it was replaced after about 6 months…

I’m not hard on a mouse and very rarely get a year out of one…

At least with Logitech they will keep replacing them for three years.

Did you guys who got free replacements go straight to Logitech, or the retail store you bought it from?

      • #1350053

Most of the time I go straight to Logitech. Yeah… they’re not as rugged as they once were. I like the arc mice because they feel soooo much better in my hand. Wireless mice batteries, with office use, have to be replaced every 45 days or so.

    • #1350009

I called them and they replaced it right away…Within a few days.
I didn’t have to send the bad one back, they told me to re-cycle it…

    • #1350034

Thanks to you and ‘Medico’ I contacted Logitech (on a Saturday!) and they are going to send a new replacement.

I didn’t have the purchase receipt, but that didn’t matter; great Customer Service and being the fickle beast that I am I will continue buying Logitech gear. 😎

    • #1350036

      I had the receipt.
It’s always a good idea to register the product on their site then there is a record of when you bought it.

I write the date on the bottom of the mouse….

Microsoft is good with their products also.
I had a mouse from them go bad and being it was discontinued they gave me one worth twice as much.

    • #1350044

Glad Logitech came through again. I think I had the receipt, but if you registered the mouse (online) when you buy it, then they can see that and will send a replacement without any arguments.

Those darn mice. Call the Cat! LOL

Oops, I misinterpreted the question as in:
How long will the mouse last now that so many devices have touch screens! 😉
