How can I add a yellow notebook background – a yellow paper with black lines, just like in all notes apps on smartphones – to a Word document? Will it require a template or something, or simply can be done with Word?

TIA

RFE,

Try googling: Ms Word notebook background

Every link directs to a guide for Word on Office for Mac, not for Windows. And, I can’t find any Notebook Layout option in the view menu.

I’ve tried to search for stationery, but couldn’t find any yellow notepad template.

Doesn’t help. Every link from the first answer leads to the same page, the main Office Online template page, and not to any yellow notepad template.

Have you tried just Googling for images of notepads? I found plenty of them, many of which didn’t have copyright restrictions. If you’re graphically inclined, you can create a page-shaped image with a yellow background color and a horizontal and vertical few lines. You could even scan a piece of yellow notepad paper.

Once you have an image (and they really seem to be everywhere), insert into header. Set wrapping option to behind text, stretch to all page edges, and close the header.

Every Word document involves a template.
Are we talking Word here? or the NotePad Program?
There are not such options for the NotePad Program; that is plain text.

Word for the Mac has a Notebook view not in Word for Windows.

I found lots of links to Windows resources by using Google as recommended by RetierdGeek.

To add a yellow notebook background with black lines to a Word document, similar to the appearance of notes apps on smartphones, you can do it within Word without needing a template. Here’s how you can achieve this:

Step 1: Set the Page Background Color

1. Open Word: Start by opening Microsoft Word and creating a new document.
2. Go to the Design Tab: Click on the “Design” tab in the ribbon at the top of the screen.
3. Set Page Color: In the “Page Background” group, click “Page Color” and choose a yellow color that resembles notebook paper.

Step 2: Add Black Lines (Horizontal Lines)

1. Insert a Table for Lines:
• Go to the “Insert” tab and click “Table.”
• Create a table with 1 column and enough rows to fill the page (e.g., 25 rows).
2. Format the Table:
• Remove Borders: Click on the table to select it, go to the “Table Design” tab, and choose “No Borders” from the “Borders” dropdown.
• Add Bottom Borders to Each Row:
• Select the entire table again, click the “Borders” dropdown, and select “Bottom Border.”
• Adjust Row Height:
• Right-click inside any cell, select “Table Properties,” and under the “Row” tab, set the height to a fixed size that resembles the spacing on a notebook (e.g., 0.4 inches).
3. Set Line Color:
• If needed, set the line color to black by selecting the table, clicking on “Borders” > “Borders and Shading,” and setting the color to black.
4. Remove Shading:
• Ensure that there’s no background shading in the cells by selecting the table, going to “Shading” (in the “Table Design” tab), and setting it to “No Color.”

Step 3: Adjust Layout

1. Remove Margins:
• Go to the “Layout” tab, click “Margins,” and set to “Narrow” or “Custom Margins” to reduce the white space around the edges.
2. Resize the Table:
• Drag the edges of the table to fit within the page margins.

Step 4: Lock the Table (Optional)

To prevent the lines from moving when you type, you can lock the table in place:

1. Convert to Picture (Alternative Method):
• You can copy the table and paste it as a picture, then set it as a background image for the page.
• Right-click the pasted picture, select “Wrap Text” > “Behind Text,” and adjust the position.

Step 5: Save as a Template (Optional)

If you plan to use this style regularly, save the document as a template:

1. Save as Template:
• Go to “File” > “Save As.”
• Choose “Word Template” under the “Save as type” dropdown and save the file.

Final Product

You should now have a Word document with a yellow background and black lines that looks like notebook paper. You can type over the lines just like in a notes app.”

There is an easy method that makes each page look exactly like a yellow notepad sheet.
Step 1: Make a color scan of a blank yellow notepad page and save as a .jpg photo.
Step 2: Open a new Word Document.
Step 3: Select the Design tab in the Ribbon above, select the Watermark down arrow and select Custom Watermark to open Printed Watermark window.
Step 4: Select Picture Watermark. Click Select picture button to open an Explorer window to locate and select the .jpg photo you made from the yellow notepad sheet. Click the dropdown arrow and set the scale to 100%. Uncheck Washout if that is checked.
Step 5: Click Apply and Close the window.
Step 6: Save as a template for future use.

The Watermark method negates the need for adjusting an inserted photo or other formatting problems and simply replaces the background with an image ready to write on top of.

Here is a Word document like you want.

I downloaded the document from the link above and clicked on it to allow editing.
I’ve found that ‘exact’ line spacing at 25pt (0 pt before and 0 pt after) hits every scored line exactly, no matter the font or font size. 2.5″ left margin starts the typed line just past the red vertical scored line and .25″ right margin keeps it within right edge. Top margin at 1.77″ starts first line and bottom margin at .17″ finishes page on penultimate scored line.

I’m not sure what those dots are (circled in red). They seem to be in the template, but I can’t get rid of them.

This is 14 pt Tahoma, top of the document.

This is 12 pt Tahoma, bottom of the document.

Those dots were on the original notepad sheet .jpg that I scanned. I did it quick to demonstrate how to do it and didn’t inspect the photo. Appears that my scanner glass needed cleaning. Redid it and here the same .docx file without the stains. The real thing is you know how to do this for yourself.
